Runtime 217 error
I seem to get this error when trying to access the steam support link, thing is once i try and then get this error my I.E is screwed to the point of having to reboot the PC to sort it. Works fine untill trying to access the steam support link (under help) and then it all screws up again.

There are 2 or 3 runtime 217 errors though that come up but its all the same to me :(

OS = Win 7 64bit Ultimate
Internet explorer 11 (fully upto date)

U need to look in Windows Event Logs, such errors as this should be listed in there, look for the full error log and see what exactly it is pointing to.

Is this happening within Steam Client? Or only when u are viewing Steam sites in IE (or other web browsers)?

just happens when i click the Steam support option that is under the help menu. It happens at no other time and once this is done i cannot access IE at all without getting the error. It does not show up or appear at all unless i click the steam support option link. So yes i would say it is something strictly to do with steam and that particular option link.

heh guys I think I have a similar problem, I just downloaded ACT of WAR Direct Action and when I hit the play button it showed the run time error 217 at 001B2E14, anyone have an idea how to fix this?

I would try this fix first:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822521

As far as it happening at random for various websites or apps; it is usually a runtime scripting error due to either Java or Visual C++

Best bet is to uninstall any versions of Java and Visual C++ and reboot. Then download and install the latest ones.

Here are links to latest Java and Visual C++ runtimes:

Oracle Java Runtime
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtimes
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2019667

*Make sure u handle these installs as Admin user.

For both Java and Visual C++, if u have 64bit OS you should install both 32bit (x86) and 64bit (x64) versions of such runtimes.

For Visual C++, different apps/games require a different version; so you will want to install 2005, 2008, 2010, and 2012 for these.

Once installs have completed, reboot and then Check for Updates via Windows Updates.
