Game Servers 24/7?
Hi guys. You could say I am like any other Singaporean school boy that really loves playing games. I will appreciate it if there is no hate comments. Anyways, moving on.

Well you see...I love creating my own server and being admin on it with my friends. We always hang out in my server and just mess around with the players sometimes. I really enjoy doing it but the thing is, I have to turn off the server because I'm going to sleep, go out, etc.

I feel really guilty for the other players that were in my server and suddenly disconnected. So I have been looking for ways to make my server 24/7.

The first thing I WANTED to try was to leave my computer running in its "weakest" state while the server can still run. I was about to try that but after thinking it through, it wasn't possible. Considering if I were to leave it 20/5 on, meaning 20 hours on 5 days while I leave it totally off for two days, I would have to either allocate time to wake up and on/off(depending on the on hours) the server on a school day. And logically speaking, the computer might still overload and spoil to it being on 20 hours straight. So in the end, I did not try it.

The second thing I wanted to try was a thing called VPS(Virtual Private Server). Well this one wasn't as successful as before, not even the slightest bit. What I think a VPS allows you to do is run your computer virtually but the thing is, it is pretty expensive EACH MONTH. Furthermore, the only way of paying for it is using a credit card. My parents wouldn't want to pay every month at that amount (they would always say this,"Why pay to those people free money? You might as well use this money to buy yourself mac donalds or a good meal!"). So in the end, this plan failed.

My last resort which I recently found out was this "ad paying thingy" called MotdGD . MotdGS allows you to place ads on your server motd and when people look at it, you get payed. As I mentioned before that I was a Singaporean, MotdGD doesn't nearly pay me as much as the rate of certain countries. Furthermore, the ads might not display all the time for the players that join the server so it is not counted. To make things worse, they only allow you to withdraw when there is a minimum of 10 USD in the account.

So this is my question to you: I am still considering my 2nd resort which was leaving the computer on 24/7. I have a spare computer that I don't use anymore but I can use it for running the server 24/7. But will it really spoil if I used the method of "20/5"? I am only planning to do this until I can rent a fairly decent server with enough players constantly. I know some of you might say, "Then you might as well give up, since you stated so many problems". Well I have a gaming channel on youtube and I hope one day it gets big and people look up to me. So it is only right if I could host a server for them to play with me games. It is important to me because I see so many famous youtuber run their own server with a big community. I hope to them one day. I look forward to your reply.

Leaving a computer on 24/7 shouldn't hurt it. That's what servers are FOR.
But wouldn't it heat up the inside(sounds so wrong xD) and spoil? After all, it is 24 hours.

That's what the fans are for.

Nothing wrong with leaving a computer on 24/7 except your electricity bill will go up.

I restart my computer once a week and have only turned it off a handful of times throughout the year.

So it won't spoil?

If you believe your cooling fans are broken, take it to a repair shop.

Any computer that can't handle 24/7 is broken and you should take it back and ask for a refund where you bought it.

And why would it break because you are using it? Why did you buy it? To leave it in some corner to just look at it...?

Computers don't need rest or sleep. That's the reason we invented them.

oh ok thanks for your help. :) So would it be a good idea to host a server from my computer or rent a real one?
Also, I forgot to mentioned that I will leaving my computer in off display mode. Cause if it was sleeping or hibernating, the server would be turned off too. So would it spoil?

Computers are made for this, do not worry.
If you don't want to leave your personal computer on, there's some server hosting sites that are pretty cheap. Left 4 Dead servers can run as low as $5 /mo from what I've seen.

Well like I said, my parents would say, "Why pay to those people free money? You might as well use this money to buy yourself mac donalds or a good meal!". So I'm only willing to earn money virtually to pay for the server with that money or do it for free.

I know that feel. Whenever I eat out now, I think to my self:

But really, you'll be burning out your CPU parts. Of course, that's only with saying all technology dies eventually, just running a server on it would have that be faster. I hate to advertise on here, but Amazon Web Services offers free server hosting on their micro instance. I think that would be enough to run a small Left 4 Dead server. Considering checking them out as a server host.

Nice
I'm still worried about the fact about my computer going in off display. My computer data is located here: -----> http://www.acer.com.ph/ac/en/PH/content/model-datasheet/DT.SJPSP.003

Also, I'm afraid that me making it 24/5 makes its fan and hardrives spoil. For serious though, will it harm my computer a lot?

I am also wondering if sleep works. I heard it is pretty "safe" but im not sure if the server will close( connection problem in game). I tried it once but was unsure with the results. Could anyone reply to me in accordance to my questions?
