Why didn't you add L4D2 to everybody library instead of forcing them to download it in 24 hours?
Steam has been completely broken for the last 3 hours: store broken, community down, trading not working. And things are going to be worse since americans are starting to login now

I strongly suggest to add 24 hours for every sale (flash deals and community choices too)

Guys calm Down, this happens every year regardless of the sales, between new games being given and all the cash that people recieve this time of year today and tomorrow will probably be the busiest days of the year for the steam servers, as for the whole L4D2 thing it is the fact that everyone is flooding the store, not the downloads, which are handled by a completely different server, that is causing the error, just go make yourself a drink and come back, thats what i did for a friend with a busted laptop so he could get the game. and besides in a few hours, it will be evening at least where i am and alot of the users will be getting off to go to bed, just be patient and stop hurrying to try to get into the store and the problem will resolve itself

Absoletely confusing. "install now" makes more sense on the L4D2 page since the purchase button literally says Install now though pressing it installs nothing, just links the account. However the L4D2 store has its own version of the instructions saying press Play Now, which isnt there. Absolute mess.

Its not a forced download. It only seems so due to lack of clear instructions. Still doesnt change that valve made a bit of a bluder.

Actually, I was able to add the game to my library without installing it. It's probably more that everyone went ahead and downloaded it.

You have COMPLETELY missed the point of why this is such a bad move, and you have also made yourself look like an idiot. In order to have the game for free, you need to install it today, otherwise it goes back to full price. That is why everyone is downloading it at the same time.

That, in turn, cripples the steam servers. That sucks because there are several games that are on sale for only a few hours but no one can buy them because they made one of the best games free only if you download it.

So yes, it is a stupid move. Not only are people denied the opportunity to buy a game that is on sale for a few hours because of this free giveaway on the busiest day of the year, they have effectively shot themselves in the foot by deciding "Hey, we don't want to make money off of the sales we are putting up!"

So ask yourself, how selfish is it that people are displeased with the fact that they cannot buy gifts for others or for themselves with money they might have received for Christmas because they didn't think this through properly?

Steam has more users online during US time zones, so obviously the spike is going to drop now. If there's anything to blame, it's the ocean. Or perhaps the Earth's rotation. Or Valve.

Add L4D2 to everyone's library, and stop allowing downloads of it for now.

That's how you can solve this mess now.

I don't understand why you're rewarding the worst customers (anyone who wants L4D2 and hasn't bothered to buy it at $5 is NOT a good customer), and punishing the good ones anyway.

Go ahead and give your game away to freeloaders if you want, but stop letting them clog up the servers because you're ruining Christmas for your good customers.
