Can't purchase AoE II HD four pack as a gift.
I own Age of Empires II HD and its expansion, and I want to buy some copies as Christmas gifts for my friends. Buying the pack of four is obviously the best way to save money, but when I add it to my cart then go to the cart, it says I can't purchase it as I already own the game, and I should purchase it as a gift. That's fine, but it won't let me select the purchase as gift option!

Anyone else get this problem? Is it something I'm doing wrong and can fix? Or is Steam being weird?

You can not purchase a pack of games that you already own. The purchasing account always has one copy applied to said account.

That's... a shame. Seems odd too, as one is able to add a game they don't own to their cart, and purchase that as a gift. Why should packs of games always have to send one game to the purchasing account?
People would buy a bunch on sale, resell later for profit.

These bundles are meant for friends to play together, not to be a money maker for joe blow.

That's just how these 2/3/4-packs work. It's not odd, it's business.

So you basically have rearrange things a bit. You can't put the game into your inventory, and since it's on sale you can't really wait either. Which means one of said friends basically has to buy it with your money -- so it will be early christmas for him, but he'll also have the three gifts. I don't know whether you can re-gift a gift; maybe he can gift those three to you so the other friends would at least receive their gift from the correct person.

Ah, I see the point about business. I guess that makes sense.

Yeah, I've asked my friends to consider buying the pack for the others, with me paying them back. Hopefully my friends would still consider their copies of the game as gifts from me.
The message you read isn't very accurate, and can be confusing. Because you already own Age of Empires II HD, its multi-pack is off limits. You can't even buy it as a gift. Your only option is to buy individual copies and gift those. Obviously, that's not the best way to save money!

Alternatively, you could give money to one of your friends, and let him or her buy the pack of four. That might be super troublesome or even impossible. It is definitely very inconvenient and user-unfriendly, but that's the way the cookie crumbles!

I'm in the same boat, and I would like to buy some Awesomenauts copies as gifts, but the multi-pack is unfortunately not an option.

Are you still planning to buy an Age of Empires II HD copy or two for your friends?

After all, it's the thought that counts!

Yes, hopefully my friends will appreciate the gesture, even if one of them has to do the buying and gifting for me.
