Valve are having issues with their servers because the Payday 2 update is so big that they have to juggle between other people's and your Payday 2 downloads.

The disk idle and disk busy thing has always existed...its just now that thier was a addition to show when its idle or busy...steam changed nothing. Its your pc

It isn't. Payday2 has the worst update system ever designed and there WILL be a lot of download....pause while the drive thrashes about....small bit of download....loads more drive thrashing..... another small bit of download.

I would ask a steam representative if the idle/busy thing has anything to do with the game download process. 3 seconds is short and sounds like you need to take a look into background progs and see if there are any that are interfeing with web browser while things are downloading. You could even test this problem first with a simple microsoft download or something....

This doesn't just happen on Payday. I have tried downloading Nihilumbra today. When I look at the download page with nothing downloading, steam says my drive is idle, as soon as the download starts, steam says the drive is busy and stops the download. I pause the download and the drive is idle again. It is only busy when steam is downloading so it appears to be detecting itself. Bit of a catch 22 situation. I used to get great download speeds as I'm on 120meg, but now it stop starts and a 500meg game takes half an hour instead of a couple of mins.

I just logged into steam today after at least 2 months out and it updated to this crap disk busy thing. I had around 20 games to update, payday 2 on top of it. And it just stopped, nothing happening, disk busy red, my freaking hdd led blinking like crazy, and nothing. I just sent payday 2 to hell and just like that, all my stuff updated normally and its like never happened.

I don't know if there is any official info about this out there, but i would guess you're downloading updates piece by piece and when the "idle"-light flashes, it will install your downloaded piece directly, then, when it's ready and installed, it goes on downloading the next piece..

just guessing.

Are you serious? All the light is for so you can tell what is going on. It does not change the operation at all. It is not a function, it is an indicator light that tells you if your hard drive is busy or not. Before you just had to guess why the download stopped. Now you know it stopped because it is writing files to disk which likely have to be uncompressed before they can be installed.

I have the same problem but not with payday 2. I have the problem with Half life 1. What the-?
I really don't get it.

The disk status light is for the primary volume that you have Steam installed on. If for any reason this volume is being used by higher processes, Steam stops the download. Facedown is correct, it is an indicator. Steam is not the problem, the games are not the problem is is YOUR COMPUTER.

P.S. The use of "?!?!??!??!?" is relatively ignorant...
I'm having the same problem with TF2, as soon as I start the download, it goes for a few seconds, says disk busy, and then COMPLETELY halts! I have to sit here and manually put it back in the queue every 10 seconds, and I only get around 1mb/ps, if I'm lucky! It's never done this before, until this light thing came up, I'm not even doing anything else when I try to download it!

Disk busy means its patching a large file. WAIT FOR IT TO FINISH.
Azza ☠ Jan 21, 2014 @ 10:10am
This tends to happen with many steam downloads, they download a bit, disk busy, then download the rest. It's quite normal, seems to be semi-installing, alloying disk space, or maybe even waiting on network upload/download, etc. The download mechanics are a little bit over-sensitive to disk utilization stats though and it can wait for a while - maybe due to your anti-virus scanner (I believe this to be the most likely cause) or normal activity on the drive even. You will find with a SSD drive or cache, this still can occur, but not take as long.

Just consider it as chuck downloading. You wait until it's done - the more you muck around on the drive and stare at it, the more it will just mock you and keep ya waiting.
