Do I need the disc if I activate a retail copy on steam?
I bought Company of Heroes and Opposing Fronts years ago from a store and started playing them again recently. I decided to use the CD Key to activate the games on Steam for convenience sake but when I launch the game through my library I'm asked to insert the disc in order to play. I've never activated a retail game before and am wondering if this is normal. I assumed that once I activated it on Steam and it downloaded to my Steam Library it would work like every other Steam game I have, ie no disc required. Should I have uninstalled the original copy of the game from my hard drive before installing the Steam version?

If there's a Steam version and a non-Steam version, then these two are indeed two different games.

If a retail game comes with a Steam key, you never have to use the disk for anything. Except, maybe, if the game offers an option to not install everything -- I've never used the installers that came with my few Steamgames-on-DVD that I have, so I don't even know what these 2 games are offering there.

If u installed from disc and that game required the game disc to play, then u go and activate on Steam, then this is most likely why launching from Steam now still requires the game disc to be present in drive.

Try uninstalling the game from your system entirely. Then log into your Steam account, select that game in Library > All Games. Then click Install. Steam will however have to download the game from their servers.

I would suggest using the Steam one as it will auto patch the game to latest version. If you have a game disc version, u usually have to go hunt down the patch updates and install those manually.

Thanks, I had my original store bought game installed and then downloaded it on Steam (not the "New Steam Version"). I didn't think having both versions on my system would matter since they're in different locations on the drive. I deleted my store bought files but when I launched the game in Steam it still asked for a CD. I decided to uninstall all CoH from my system, reboot and then re-download the game from Steam. Hopefully this will work. One of the main reasons I wanted this game on Steam is for the updates since the license was sold and patches are hard to find.
