1. Verify Game Files
If you’re using Steam, try verifying the integrity of the game files. Sometimes, even after re-downloading, files can become corrupted or missing.
Open Steam.
Right-click on Total War: Rome II in your library.
Select Properties.
Go to the Local Files tab.
Click Verify Integrity of Game Files. This will check for missing or corrupt files and re-download any necessary ones.
2. Update DirectX and Visual C++ Redistributables
Outdated DirectX or Visual C++ redistributables can cause crashes.
Make sure you have the latest version of DirectX installed (which is often updated with the game).
Check and install the latest Visual C++ Redistributables, which you can find on Microsoft’s official site.
3. Check for Overheating
Sometimes games can crash due to hardware issues like overheating.
Make sure your system isn't overheating. You can use software like HWMonitor or Core Temp to check your CPU and GPU temperatures while running the game.
4. Disable Mods
If you have mods installed, one of them could be causing the crash. Try disabling all mods and running the game again to see if it resolves the issue.
If this works, try enabling mods one by one to identify the culprit.
5. Adjust Graphics Settings
Sometimes, certain graphics settings can cause issues. Lowering or adjusting them may help:
Launch the game.
Go to the Graphics Settings and lower the settings (e.g., shadows, texture quality, etc.).
Try changing the resolution or switching between fullscreen and windowed mode to see if it helps.
6. Update Drivers (Again)
Even though you've already checked your drivers, it’s worth ensuring that both your GPU drivers (NVIDIA/AMD) and chipset drivers are up to date.
You can use tools like GeForce Experience (NVIDIA) or AMD Radeon Software to make sure your graphics drivers are current.
Additionally, check for updates to your Windows operating system.
7. Check for Conflicting Software
Sometimes other software running in the background can interfere with the game.
Disable or temporarily uninstall programs that might be conflicting with RTW2, such as screen recording software, overclocking tools, or anti-virus software.
8. Run the Game as Administrator
Right-click on Rome: Total War 2’s shortcut or executable file.
Select Run as administrator. This can resolve permission-related issues that might be causing the game to crash.
9. Reinstall the Game
If none of the above steps work, a complete reinstall could be the solution.
Uninstall the game completely (make sure to delete any leftover files in the installation folder).
Reinstall it, ideally to a different drive or folder if possible.
10. Check the Game’s Log Files
The game might be generating crash logs, which can provide more insight into what's going wrong. Check the Rome: Total War 2 folder for any log files (often located in your Documents or AppData folders).
You can also check for any crash dumps or error messages that might help pinpoint the exact issue.
If you've gone through these steps and the game still crashes, let me know what you're seeing in the logs or error messages (if any), and we can try more targeted troubleshooting.
