I am getting 140mbps download speed while having 1gbps connection

As the title says, I am getting only 10% worth of my download speed on Steam.

I disabled every metered options on windows or throttling options on steam, clearing download cache, uninstalling steam and reinstalling it.. Nothing seems to work.

I am in Canada, and trying to download from a server that is next city to me, someone from oversea gets better connection than I do when connecting to the same server and downloading the same game.

Could the problem come from something corrupted on my Windows, the ISP router or something else? My salt meter is going up every major games I try to download or update

I should also add that the downloads starts at 40kbps and slowly ramps up to 140mbps, after a couple of minutes.

Just going to guess. 1gigabits/s would equal to 125 megabyte/s.

Take note that 1megabyte = 8 megabits and I think Steam defaults to showing megabytes/s (MBps) and not megabits (Mbps)

If you are interpreting the units correctly, then it could be that ether your cpu or maybe a hhd can't keep up, since Steam downloads are decompressed while they are being downloaded. Or many other things

Did you set steam to show mbs? Default is mBs

ya, download speeds at steam aren't good at all. On a bad day i get 4mbps and on a good day it is 57mbps. When i run my speed test i get around 800 mbps. works great with everything but steam. Maybe too many users are on steam at the same time and just over floods it. They do need to improve their speeds in steam

That's because your hard drive can't keep up with your download speed. Try giving a limit to your dl speed on steam (a little lower than what your hard drive can do). You can increase the speed limit a little by a little to figure when it's too much

Steam downloads at 150Mbps, or 17.8Mb/s. I tried on a laptop and it was faster, at 500-600Mbps, or 75 Mb/s.

Then you know it's not the fault of Steam, or your internet connection, but the device itself.

I can confirm, something's wrong with my connection. I'll look to switch ISP, since the one I am with are still using Coaxial internet (FTTLA) instead of fiber optics (FTTH) at home.

Doesn’t that basically show it’s a local isssue and not a steam problem

Why would you think it’s a connection issue if one computer works fine but the other doesn’t…….
