How do I disable unnecessary email notifications?

I keep getting constant email notifications any time a game on my wishlist goes on sale or I get/give a forum award. There is no option to unsubscribe in the email messages themselves.

I don't want to put those emails into spam, because then it will block actually useful/important alerts (unknown log-ins etc).

You can't stop the emails for sending awards. You can set up an email filter.

Thanks Steam, I guess all steam emails now have to go into spam. How is it even legal to not allow email unsubscription?

Giving someone a clown award from virtual points that I earned from others giving me clown awards is not a "transaction". Those steam points are meaningless and hold no material value.

It's like reddit sending me mail every time I get an upvote, because I earned some karma.

It is taking points you earned and sending a portion of them to someone else, a transaction.
