Steam Gift Cards and refunds via Paypal
Hey guys, so here is the theoretical scenario:

1) my friend sends me the Steam Gift Card. Important note: he bought it, using Paypal
2) I receive and redeem it
3) in a few days, he opens a dispute in Paypal, Paypal satisfies it and returns him his money
4) Steam removes the funds from my wallet?

Is that even a possible scenario? Probably some of you had this situation? Please share your thoughts. Thanks!

3) I gift him an item, which we agreed upon (there is no other way to transfer it to his account, except for the gifting through the in-game client)
4) in a few days, he opens a dispute in Paypal, Paypal satisfies it and returns him his money
5) the funds I got from him were deducted from my account and I lost an item from step 3
6) he got a temporary restriction (in theory) + ended up without any restrictions after that (X days passed)
Sorry to be blunt. But to me it sounds like you are testing the water to see if there is a way to get an item for free by doing a chargeback, but you are unsure if it's going to hurt you in the end.

If that's not the case and you are just about to make a deal with your "friend" and are scared about being scammed. Here's what to do, keep all trades within the system Valve has for trading.

I don't think steam will remove it because you paid for it.

Why are you even concerned about this scenario? Its potentially possible, but it would result in a permanent restriction on your friend and the worst case scenario and you aren't penalized for it. If they remove the funds from your wallet you are no worse off then before the funds were sent.

Your friend will get Paypal banned from his available list of payment methods + short ban on his account.

Yes funds will be removed from your wallet. If you already spent them it will put your wallet balance in to the minus.

Your friend's account will have a restriction put on it, meaning that they will never be able to use PayPal as a method of payment again. The only way they could get rid of that restriction would be to have PayPal reverse the charge back to steam (which from my knowledge PayPal are never willing to do).

think of it like I also gave him something in return, but won't be able to refund, unlike him in this case

How can I remove a chargeback restriction from my account?

To protect our users from additional unknown charges, any accounts and purchases associated with the chargebacks are restricted. The quickest way to remove the restriction on your Steam account is for the owner of the payment method to contact their bank and to reverse the dispute. Once the funds are returned to Steam, the restriction is automatically removed, and the disputed content is restored to your account.

Note: Most banks have a limited timeframe in which chargebacks can be reversed. Please contact your bank for further details.

I mean again, why are you so concerned about this.....

If your so concerned then don't accept a gift card from your friend, or accept it and wait a few months before using it so it can't be charged back. You won't have your account shut down or anything but if the funds are reversed they take the money back

that even sounds like my own account would suffer from that chargeback, which doesn't seem right from my perspective.

It does. Paypal dispute is a chargeback.
If your friend thinks that he found foolproof method to have Steam giftcards without paying any money - no, he didn't. He will learn about it hard way.

I already replied to that dude, probably you missed it.

The article describes it and yes your account would also be affected because you were sent the gift and why it states (any accounts and purchases associated with the chargebacks are restricted.) Your payment method would not be restricted

Your friend's payment method cannot be used again. Your friend's account is restricted, you have the gift reversed and any purchases made with those wallet funds are revoked.

IF the chargeback is reversed, your friend's payment method can be used again. You however do not get the gift back.

(Once the funds are returned to Steam, the restriction is automatically removed, and the disputed content is restored to your account.)
