Steam voice chat changes sound output
So, ive looked around the web for a while, trying to find information, but I have yet to see someone mention having a similar problem, so I'm turning to the forums.

I use steam voice chat often, and up until a few months ago, the game sound and the voice sound would come through my headphones. Something changed a few months ago, that causes my sound to become split when voice chat starts. All sounds will be coming though my headphones, then when someone calls, and is connected, the game sound will immediately output through speakers, but voice will continue to come through my headphones.

I'm fairly computer competent, have messed with audio input/output, have changed steam settings, restarted, all the usual things. The only time i've been able to change to get the game sound to come though headphones is in dota 2. In audio settings, if I changed the games sounds to speakers and headphones options, then back to default, the game sound will randomly start playing though the headphones again.

Has anyone else run into this? or know how to fix this?

Im running windows 7 on a laptop, if that makes a difference to anyone.

Thanks for the help.

Well, if you are set on playing for hours straight you might want to just disable the speakers if you want all the audio through your headphones. After you are done playing, re-enable the speakers.

Ive tried that, as a short term solution, but disabling the audio device doesn't cause the game sound to come through the headphones. I end up with just the voice.

I know that I could just use skype or any number of other things, but I'd still like to solve this issue.

It sucks that such a short term solution won't work. I can't help you with anything now, seems like you have already exhausted a lot of workarounds but still not successful with the settings. I hope someone else with a solution comes up soon.

Any solutions to this problem? This started happening to me after the Windows 10 update. I can't find anything.

If the problem persist, i highly recomend searching for the latest drivers for your audio card, sometimes games and even steam mess up when you drivers are outdated, and its worth a try.

Sorry to dig up and old thread but this is happening to me. But instead of coming out of my speakers it just mutes everything but the voice chat. I've been looking all over the Internet for a solution. I set it to do nothing when it detects communication. I've set my headset to default but the game audio is extremely quiet. This also happens with Discord as well but after a call it just mutes everything until I restart my computer. I am using Bluetooth headphones that have a headphone cord but all of the sound just comes into one ear and no game audio and running Windows 10.

well, i think i've found a way to do it. sorry to dig up an old thread, but i've solved the problem. search 'sound' in the windows taskbar, click on it, select the speaker you want the voice chat to come out of, click 'properties' and select 'default communications device. if it does't work, that's as far as my advice goes

I followed your steps and it worked, but now I can barely hear the voice chat
