Steam only recognizing speakers as recording device.
My microphone works fine in all other programs, its not muted, its set as the default device and communication device, but when I go to change it in the steam voice settings, it just wont change when I click the microphone, it simply stays as "Speakers (Realtek High Definition)".
I began having this problem about 4 months ago and my mic worked fine before, I just bought a new mic for recording in hopes that it would fix the problem, but my speakers are still stuck as the recording device.

I've got the same problem for over a year now. Steam thinks the default recording device should be my Speakers which is an output device. Clicking the "Change Device" button opens up the Sound Window with the Recording Tab. I select my Microphone, but Steam does not respond to the selection, it keeps the default recording device as Speakers. My microphone is my default device. My drivers are up to date and the microphone works fine on Ventrilo, Audacity, Skype, etc.
I submitted a ticket with a picture pointing out this specific problem, but their response was "Due to the variety of microphone and headset configurations, we are not able to provide direct support for specific microphone or voice chat issues."

Shameless bump.

I've been having this issue for a while, not really sure because I just noticed while playing Dirt 3. And there was a lot of people with the same issue because about everyone I was playing with had their mic open all the time.

I don't have a mic and Steam defaults the recording to my speakers with no way to change it.

You should look into it.

Well, found a workaround for my case.

- Go to Steam -> Settings -> Voice
- Click on "Change device". A popup and the audio section of the Windows Control Panel will appear.
- Click on OK on the popup to close it.
- In the audio section of the Windows Control Panel disable your speakers and click on "DETECT AUDIO DEVICES" on your Steam Settings.
- Repeat as many times as needed disabling audio devices until it picks your mic device or doesn't pick up any device and shows [No recording device detected] which was what I needed.
- Close the Steam settings with "OK" and it shouldn't change anymore.

EDIT: Until you restart Steam or Reboot which is lovely...

Disabling the Speakers does make Steam detect my Microphone to be the Recording (audio input) device, but testing it with the Test Microphone button shows that no audio is picked up (sound bars don't light up). Also disabling the Speakers means I can't hear others in game. Enabling the Speakers brings me back to square one where the Recording (audio input) device is choosing the Speakers again. This problem is pretty similar in this discussion: https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/1/530646080859787740/
