Can't login after changing password
I have recently had to uninstall and redownload steam and could not remember my old password. I have reset my password but when I try to log in it says I have entered an incorrect password.

I have tried now to reset my password five times, each with a new password, but get the same error every time I try to log in.

Please help

Also, I am able to use the new password to log in to this forum so I don't understand why the desktop app will not recognise the new password

Are the passwords that you are making longer than 64 characters? The Steam website and phone app accept longer passwords than the Steam client accepts. The Steam client will cut off your password after 64 characters.

I think the limit is 64 characters when using the Steam app. (From what I can research on the matter)

I suggest doing a password reset and making it 64 or smaller.

The password length limit of the Steam Website and the Steam App are different. The website can handle up to 99 characters while the app can only handle up to 64.

I just recently changed my password on my Steam account to a 99-character length string using a password manager. I was able to log-in normally to the website by copying and pasting the password.

The problem happened in the steam app when I tried to copy and paste the password. It can only accept up to 64 characters.

Also make sure that there are no extra spaces at the end of the account name and no extra spaces at the end of the password.

For me, the problem was just that I had a space after my username causing the login error. If you are sure your password is correct, try putting your cursor right at the end of your username and hold down the DEL key (not backspace) to delete any extra "spaces" that might have accidentally been entered after your user name. Spaces cannot be seen but will cause the log-in failure.

- Hope that helps someone.

Thanks for the reply. The length of the password is not an issue - is is 13 digits long.

After several futile attempts at changing my password, i noticed that I get a separate email with a code for "Steam Guard". I have tried entering this code to verify my account - I am using the same laptop I used before when I was able to login so I don't understand why this is necessary - but even after entering the steam guard code and seemingly getting my account fully verified, when I try to login on the desktop app it is still telling me that my password or account name is incorrect.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Steam but this does not fix the issue.

I have created an alternate Steam account on the same email address and I have no problems logging in on the desktop app with this new account.

I am able to login on the steam website with my old account and have tried disabling Steam Guard through the account details page but this does not fix the login issues, and I cannot post on this forum with it disabled???

Good news. I am now able to login to steam on the desktop app.

The problem was something to do with the account name not being recognised when I typed it in to the box. I got it to work by writing my account name in a word document and copy/pasting it into the box instead.

No idea why that should work instead, such a dumb bug that Steam needs to get fixed, but I''m just happy that I'm now able to redownload my games.

Even weirder, I could log in if I unchecked the "Remember my password" box. I copy my user name from a doc file, opened Steam without putting in any info, no paste, and it worked.

I have the same problem. I changed the password, and now I can't login using the desktop app. I can login via my phone or using the browser, but not using the desktop app. It stuck on verifying. Cleaning the cache didn't work. Also, Steam is allowed in the firewall. Help!

Pfff reinstalling Steam fixed the issue. I was using a new, probably beta version and the dialog box was new, now reinstalling steam to the old stable version fixed the issue. Thanks God!

The way I solved it:
Restart Steam
Use your mail address instead of your username

I had this issue but realized I was using my email rather than my username.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
