What you describe can happen when the game's initial first boot does so with a resolution and refresh rate your main display doesn't like.
Can be annoying as you change these setting's in game. However most games will usually come with a file in there root directory/ subfolder of this or my documents where settings are saved and can be edited in a text document.
See if you can find such file and make sure resolution and refesh rate / vsync settings are compatible with your main display!
I'll have to try what you said about changing the file in the root directory, thanks for the help :).
luckily i've managed to get dark souls workin now(it stopped acting up after I reinstalled it all weirdly).
