Portal

Didn't give me achievement "Basic Science".
So recently I've been playing Portal (1) and I've been also collecting all the achievements for it. Today I decided to finish the challenge maps to get the 3 achievements (Aperture Science, Rocket Science, and Basic Science). When I finished the last map I got only 2 achievements. Aperture Science and Rocket Science. Basic Science is where collect all "bronze medals" when Aperture Science is where you collect all the "gold metals". I don't know what happened but I really need suggestions on how I can fix this. Thanks for any help you give ^-^.

I'm also facing this problem, it seems. While not as advanced as tyjohn, I did complete the bronze-level requirements for all 18 challeges (Basic Science achievement). The achievement is complete in Portal, but not registering in Steam under MacOS 10.9.

I've carried out the steps in the linked article three times, to no avail. When I completed a challenge map after removing/renaming the gamestate.txt file, Portal gave me an update on the achievement progress for Rocket and Aperture Science, but Basic Science was not included. This would seem to confirm that the game considers the achievement complete, but does this mean it won't trigger it again for Steam's sake?

An update on this: every time I start Portal and check the Achievements menu item, it shows 18/18 complete for Basic Science, but it is not marked as completed. Once I complete a challenge level and return to the Achievements menu, it IS marked as complete (i.e., it will be hidden if the hide-completed-achievements box is checked). Any chance this is a regression that popped up in the recent update?

Same exact thing happens to me, coincidence?

Tyjohn, does that mean you finally scored the achievement in Steam? If so, I'll try plugging away at Frenetic's solution a few more times.

Yeah I got the achievement.

Another 5 times with renaming gamestate.txt, with Steam Cloud sync both on and off at various times. Tried deleting the Steam Cloud files. Still no luck with the Basic Science achievement. On the plus side, I'm now two silver medals away from Rocket Science...

Tyjohn, are you on a Mac? I've seen other instances where achievements on the Mac platform are buggy relative to their Windows counterparts. Just wondering if there's anyone else out there with the same problem.

I'm on Windows

D3C, another idea would be to edit the gamestate.txt file directly.
In my file, the three "science" achievements are numbers 10/11/12 (id 124/125/126). I've unlocked all three, and each shows "msg" "17".
Basic Science should be id 124, so try changing the value of "msg" to 17 or 16 (as well as changing "value" to "0") and then replay one of the challenges.

Also, avoid looking at the in-game achievements menu before playing the challenge, just in case that makes a difference...

Good luck. I hope it is not just a Mac issue. :(

Just in case anyone's still following this, I submitted a ticket with Valve regarding the Basic/Rocket/Aperture Science achievements on Mac. On 18 January, I received this response:

"We have investigated your request further and re-created the situation.... As such, we will investigate this matter and take appropriate action. Please understand that due to the length of time associated with development, we cannot provide a specific timeline for when this may be resolved."

If I ever hear anything further, I'll try to remember to post it here...

I now have the achievement but thanks for sending the ticket. Hopefully they can patch it so no new players get confused and what not. Thanks :)

7 years later, only this helped me 100% Portal. You lad, are an absolute saviour.
