You just paid for a disc and case. Avoid used games that activate on Steam.
Also that game will definitely get cheaper then 12$ in the upcoming xmas sale. And it was 10$ last week and it has been 5$ before that. You made a bad deal.
Are you sure it can't be used? I've seen some posts say if you take a picture of the product key, game, and email, and send it to Steam they will fix the problem
Also hardcopy games which are activated via la Steam and bear the Steam logo on the case, can use the CD-key only once. So something like a used Steam game is a pure nonsense and nothing more as a unusable disc.
Check the description of the thing you bought and what it said to contain and how it would work.
You have to contact the seller and/or amazon if you want your money back or something.
And like others said, sales are better than used games anyway. Wait for x-mad and get the game for dirt cheap then.
There you have - if it has "Steam Powered" or "Requires Acceptance of SSA (Steam Subscriber Agreement)" then is a Steam game and those CD-keys can be used only once.
If you really wanted a hardcopy, a lot of shops selling games should have unopened ones on stock. Games from EA can be used up to 5 different computers if I know good.
