The Username/Nickname System

My username right now is currently one I am proud to have but of couse I am still stuck with the same old defaut username I had which I hate and have to use to login to steam etc. This nickname system on steam does seem to work well but now Im getting paranoid if steam will ever remove nicknames and keep our old usernames permanent. Would this ever happen? I know no one can see my default one but it gets annoying and on my nerves every time I login and Im just curious to know.

There is no nickname, and no default username.

I suppose you're talking about the account name as the "default username", and the profile name as the "nickname"? That's unlikely to change; it's a useful security measure for one thing, and what would they gain from removing it and making everyones account names public?

up to spring 2004 your contact email was the only account name you could have.

I do not expect that to happen.
