Steam is slow when patching a game
Its also slow when installing as well.

No, its not my internet, I usually download games very quickly. I'm talking I had a game with a 2gb update that downloaded in less than 20min. But it required patching the entire game. all 130+ gb of it. It was saying it was going to take over 37hrs.

And for whatever reason, Steam refuses to give me more than 7MB/s write speed on an SSD that tested well over 200MB/s write speed. I decided to run a test on a game I own on another platform, the exact same game. I fully downloaded and installed a game on my Xbox platform(not the console) in less than 20min, and afterwards, Steam took over 3 hours for the exact same game.

I have seen SOME games get upwards of 150MB/s disk speed, but not all games do this. And I cannot replicate it either. Patching a game for me has become a nightmare since so many games require the whole game to be patched to be updated, and it makes it impossible to play sometimes.

I set steam to be realtime priority in task manager, and it still, at most, only ever uses 35% disk.

Patching speed is entirely reliant on your PC's performance. Having said that, it's not like direct copying data from one source to another. There's a lot more to it, so you're not going to get full disk speed write because it's not necessarily just writing data. There's decrypting, decompressing, writing, saving, verifying, etc. And if it's doing that to 130GB of file data, it could take a long time. Changing priority in the task manager isn't necessarily going to force the process to utilize full speeds.

The issue is on your end... Also, 200MB/s write speed is slow AF.
Cathulhu 19 lutego 2024 o 0:23
200MB write speed on an SSD? Ouch. If that is sequential and not random write speed, then the SSD is utterly bad.
Iceira 19 lutego 2024 o 0:23
Respect free space storage, soon anything lesser then last ½tb then you can be in trouble today.

games is bigger then 100gb if you ask high end games this will go up then graphic also do in them games, we could be rude and say 1tb free, but that require games is past 250gb installation size some few games is there already, with alll dlc and mods.

Well over 200MB I dont remember what speed it actually tested at, but my point still stands, and this isnt helpful. My games patch/install at less than 10MB on an SSD, but its literally only on steam. I cant figure out why I downloaded installed Outer Worlds on Epic Games in less than 30min, yet steam takes over 2hrs.

Still your problem if your own ISP cant delever data to you, try switch steam DL zone.
will not help if your own ISP is the issue or there isp parter thottle network speed or cant keep up.

this article here explains the reasons for "limited SSD transfer speed".

https://www.quora.com/Why-does-my-SSD-have-a-limited-transfer-speed

---------------------------------------------------------

and like what "iceira" stated, Internet Connection speed also plays a huge factor as well.

the download isnt the issue. I watched it download the patch in less than 5min. The patching was slow, not the download.

upload speed and download speed are the 2 main factors for Internet Connection Speed.

Download speed is always higher than upload speed.

-------------------------------------------------------

for example, download speed is 500 mb/s

but, upload speed is 200 mb/s

------------------------------------------------------

upload speed is affected by multiple factors.

p.s xbox series x/s allows us to check download speed and upload speed for our internet connection.

steam download and upload speeds are using this metrics

1) megabytes per sec

internet service provider is using

i) megabits per sec

7 megabytes per sec = 58.23703 megabits per sec

Thats still your cpu and disk I/O have been post by other helper many times,
try ask own board support if you have a issue , there was post in the past with 12000 generation chipset driver with its boost technology cant say you have such sense we dont know what you have, "over 37hrs." thats sounds like a issue somewhere.

having the same problem here with some games, 500mb/s internet, 3500mb/s nvme (970evo plus), my problem is on updates, had a rust update today of 202.5mb that took 40 minutes to install... there are others game that i have both on steam and on a standalone instalation that takes sometimes 20+ minutes to install the update on steam version while the standalone version takes like 2 minutes. How is my and OP's hardware affecting ONLY steam? huh

same crappy hardware maybe, sense you ask and same driver and bios maybe, please tell us here if you have same driver same matching hardware as OP.
gl digout what pc full spec is here. ( just so you get it i think i have seen standard pc been faster then 40 minute from 10 years older pc build, that can do better, this is why you need hands on experts here.

snd be happy you get a reply with it, even then you dont like it, take a spare pc and test it for yourself , if older pc can do then you have a main pc issue. ( its actual that simple )

Its here you forget i see multi pc in a network and see other ways in who has a issue with 1 pc. then all other pc works better then a highend pc that do not.

mass production also has its advantage, things and ways ppl do not think on here.
then you are a standalone pc in own local home.

if you had 10 pc in own home and 1 did not perform, i bet it wont take you 2 sec to point a finger on what pc has a issue.
