updating executable problem

i was going to play a game i played before on the same hardware againg but when i hit play i get
updating executable for long time and nothing happens

i dont know why i have to go down this way everything has to be updated for no reason
just let me play the game ffs

i did those stuff

re-downloading the game
using another internet connection
verifying files
playing offline/online
start as admin stuff

i have no idea what to do anymore
my hardware is also way above reqs

any help?

Having the same issue as previous person. Played AVP flawlessly, and all of a suddenly it stopped working when I verified the files.

I have a same problem too.
I have to send a bug report to Steam Client, but I have to wait for weeks or longer to let Valve employees to respond that. Patience are required, but not everybody including myself like that.

I'm having this problem with AVP, no matter what i do, it just says "updating executable", same as OP, ive tried everything, disabling stuff, trying to run as admin, NOTHING. i even tried doing a custom scan on the AVP FILES THSMELFS to see if that was the issue, but "no threat was detected", i have no idea what to do, and i just wanna play AVP :(

We're both having the same problem at the same time. I even went into the games community hub discussions and one person has a "solution" that doesn't even work on my laptop so I'm lost too

AVP was one of my favs too, it seems certain games like it are also having the issue, somebody is reaching out to steam tho, maybe they will fix it.

I was having the same issue but I don't know why. But when I turned off my antivirus Windows defender I launched it. It didn't work and then I launched it again and then I got the prompt what the heck is going on

For any others that find this thread:

I had the same symptoms as the OP. The game installed fine via Steam, but when launched through Steam I'd get a Steam popup box saying something like "updating executable". It would sit on screen at that for a few seconds, then just drop back to Windows.

As of December 2024 (on Windows 10) the fix I had was to navigate the file system and find the actual executable for the Sniper Elite 2 (non remastered) game. For me I believe that was at:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sniper Elite V2\Launcher\SniperV2Launcher.exe

Executing from THAT DEEP LINK launched the game fine for the first launching. After that, the steam based launcher worked fine.

Today is December 29th, 2024 and I just bought Aliens vs Predator from the Winter sale. I am getting the "Updating Executable" message when trying to launch the game from the steam client for directx11.

This worked for me too, but for Spec Ops: The Line. I expect there are a number of games to which this can apply. Thank you.
