How to start streaming without friends watching

So is there a way to start streaming without the help of your friends? It seems like whenever I want to stream, one of my friends has to "engage" the stream for me.

In the overlay there is the option to watch your own stream.

When I did that my game started lagging like crazy as it takes more of my bandwith, is there no other way?

The reason the framerate dropped when you viewed your own stream is because that is the moment that it starts encoding and uploading to the Steam servers to send out to viewers, which at the time was you. The same thing would happen if you had someone else start viewing your broadcast, it is just how broadcasting works on Steam. Currently the only way to lower the performance hit is either by lowering the broadcast resolution, lowering in game settings, or getting a better computer.

You automatically are once you start playing a game.
It's when a friend requests to watch your broadcast, can you change the setting from default.

How do I start & stop my broadcast?
When you're playing a game and someone starts watching, you automatically start broadcasting. When you end the game your broadcast ends.

How do I start & stop my broadcast?
When you're playing a game and someone starts watching, you automatically start broadcasting. When you end the game your broadcast ends.
