DVI to VGA
I have old monitor with only supports VGA and have video card that only supports DVI. Right now i'm using integrated video card VGA to VGA. I can run DayZ standalone on lowest setting with lots of lags. If I buy DVI TO VGA adapter will I be able to run DayZ better ? My video card can run DayZ without laggs with DVI supporting monitor. Won't DVI to VGA adapter lower my video card performance or will it work the same as DVI to DVI ?

Sorry for my English !
It depends. Technically, there are two kinds of DVI, called DVI-A and DVI-D. You don't generally see DVI-A -- that's the analog signals. DVI-D is the digital signals. There is also a connector called DVI-I, which carries both of these.

DVI-A happens to be 100% compatible with VGA, it's just a DVI-style connector.

DVI to VGA only works for DVI-A (and, consequently, DVI-I). It does not work for a DVI-D output.

On the positive side: while monitors might have DVI-D inputs, I don't think videocards actually have DVI-D outputs. To my knowledge, if it's called DVI then it's DVI-I which means an adapter to VGA will work. However, I might be very wrong with that (times DO change, after all, and it's been a while since my last hardware purchase).

EDIT: something that will NOT work is HDMI->DVI->VGA. This is because HDMI only has DVI-D, so there are no analog signals to feed the VGA. People might get the idea to do that since there are no HDMI->VGA adapter (for that very reason), but there are HDMI->DVI and DVI->VGA adapters :-)

I think i have DVI-I. So if adapter would work, will i get same game performance as DVI to DVI or DVI to VGA my game will run slower ?

Yes. This has ZERO impact on performance; given the same graphics settings on the videocard (i.e. resolution, texture quality, anti-aliasing etc.) the performance will be exactly the same no matter how the monitor is connected.

In fact, if it's an "old VGA monitor", you might actually be using lower resolution than on the DVI monitor that you mentioned, thus getting better performance :-)

Thanks for you help :)
Yes pretty much all modern graphics card have dvi-i ports. just makes more sense. usually there is a dvi-vga adapter shipped with the card. all of mine had it.

if you buy one, just make sure you get the right one. you need one with the pins on the right!

edit: fyi the onboard dvi-ports for integrated graphics are just dvi-d

I bought full build computer, so i din't got any cables or adapters. If I have monitor with VGA cable (it's build in monitor) and a video card with DVI-I port, what kind of adapter do I need ?

it should look somewhat likes this: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Adapter_DVI_to_VGA.jpg

more pins on the dvi side is ok.
But cable from monitor is female, im confused.
Yes of course it is the opposite. It goes like this:
-Monitor- (cable) VGA m -> f VGA -adapter- DVI m -> f DVI -PC-

You wrote the vga cable is fixed on your monitor - that cable will only work as a replacement for standard vga to vga cable. cable or adapter does not matter.

what do you mean by saying- "You wrote the vga cable is fixed on your monitor - that cable will only work as a replacement for standard vga to vga cable" ? so the cable from the link I gave you would be fine ?
