- Large one in the main taskbar
- Smaller one in the taskbar (aka Notification Icons)
If you reinstalled Windows, by default u won't see "extra" icons in the notification area. Those small icons next to the clock. Right click your Taskbar > Properties > Notification Area > Customize. You can customize what shows and such, or simply choose down below to Show All.
Once that is done, with Steam Client running now u should be able to right-click the smaller notification Steam icon and from there access your recently launched games/apps, etc.
The main large taskbar icon will only handle some steam options; doesn't have a recent list u can access from there.

You can either:
"Settings - Interface - Set Taskbar Preferences and click off whatever you dont need, it starts showing more games"
or, in windows 8.1 (dunno about 7)
"Right click on the taskbar, click on 'Properties' and then go to the 'Jump Lists' tab. Change the 'Number of recent items to display' and you can have more things."
Very sorry if u added me and I ignored; I did not recognize your name or remember this thread; again I apologize.
TBO I don't see what the big deal is, Steam has always relied on the tasbar icon next to clock in order to EXIT. And I was actually a little mistaken about this until I tried it again. Cause when Steam is on the taskbar as a active app icon, it does not offer an EXIT option from that. As clicking Close Window is basically same as clicking the X on Steam Client window, which just does Auto-Minimize-to-Taskbar.
Add me again if u desire and I'll add u if u still need help on this or other PC stuff.
*PS:
I've suggested it many times over many years; I wish Steam would stop mix-matching what they are and who we as a Community are. If we had access to Community things from a person's profile, like how I can click on your name in here and click "View Posts"; that too should also be allowed when viewing a persons regular Steam profile. Then at least I for one could keep track of things related to forums better in a sense that I could better connect up with who's Steam Profile does what on the Community Forums. I mean anyone can view the forums and click a persons name and click View Posts, so why not from someone Steam Profile?
.... I uninstalled Steam without deleting the steam games, then installed it again and suddenly the problem was fixed. The icons appeared and I can once again exit Steam by right clicking on the Steam quicklaunch icon on my taskbar. I can now also start games by right clicking on Steam quicklaunch icon on my taskbar :)
Duplicated Steam in Taskbar after Running a pinned Steam in taskbar:
Unpin Steam from Taskbar and pin it back again from your Steam directory exe "Steam.exe".
Recent games in Steam Taskbar not showing:
Make Sure for me in Windows10 you have checked in "Taskbar settings/Start" turned on "Show recently opened items in Jump List on Start or the taskbar"
Make Sure in Steam "Settings/Interface/Set TASKBAR PREFERENCES" you have unchecked enough of listed items for Recent games to be displayed.
SOLVE for your problem:
Pinned Steam to taskbar not showing options such as Exit, Library or any option at all:
Problem is that when you Running steam without any Steam window opened then Steam runs as Icon in Toolbar(things next to clock opened) aka TrayIcon. To rid of this for me in Windows10 right click taskbar go to "Taskbar settings/Taskbar" Click on "Select which icons appear on the taskbar" find "Steam Client Bootstrapper" or something named Steam and turn it off. Restart steam and it be done.
Hope this guide helped to rid off any unwanted setups you had and made your Steam be easier to use from Taskbar ;)
1: Right click on steam.exe
2: Click properties.
3: Click compatibility at the top.
4: Check the "Run this program in compatibility mode for: " checkbox.
5: Select Windows 7.
This worked for me.
Hope it helped,
If not Good Luck.
