How do you get a background image
been wondering about it for years, but no clear answer or easy answer. wish we could just add a background with a simple upload.

You can't upload a background, you need to buy one from the market place

Yup. The only backgrounds are little rewards for crafting badges, they can also be sold and traded.

They also don't affect Steam-- they only appear on your own profile.

Uploading custom ones would be nice but people could just copy and paste the current images on the market and use those, rendering them pointless.

You could install Enhanced Steam and do just that. Granted, you're the only one who sees the background, though.

as the others said, you can buy backgrounds from the market or trade with other users that got the badges
