Tf2 lagging on laptop with decent specs
Hi fellow steam members, I'm a new member here, please give me your guidance. I would like to seek help regarding a recent problem I get when playing tf2. Just a few days ago, I bought a new laptop which could run tf2 very well(intel core i5, NVIDIA Geforce 840m, 8GB) - it had no problem running tf2 smoothly even on high quality. Yet as of late, tf2 has been lagging, and I have tried cleaning my registry, temporary internet files and rebooted my laptop already. This has helped my computer to run more smoothly, but nothing has changed in-game. I do not think that is due to my internet as it is more of a delayed response lag rather than lag spikes. Could it also be due to my recent installation of McAfee anti-virus software? How do I solve this problem? Please advice! Thanks in advance.

Why not post in the TF2 Forum....

It could be, yes. Antivirus software can be a resource hog at times, especially if it's running a scan in the background. It most likely also does real time scanning of what is running on your computer, which may be slowing things down. The simplest method to confirm this would be to briefly disable it, try Team Fortress 2, and see if there is a performance increase.

Hey thanks guys for your replies.
@Hi-Torque:
TF2 forum sounds to me like a forum for discussing the game itself haha, so I thought it would be more appropriate to post in this sub forum.

@torvuseremita:
Turned real time scanning off, rebooted, not much change. The fps increased to 60-70 fps and thus the game ran smoothly again, but only for a few seconds...after that it fell back to 30fps again...

Okay, let's throw some stuff at a wall and see what sticks. Can you run Team Fortress 2, find some place safe to stand (respawn for example) and when the lag spike hits press ALT-Tab to shift focus to desktop, then run task manager? We want to see what programs are using high amounts of memory and CPU, which should help identify the culprit.

Hmm, about 15% cpu usage and 50% memory. Tf2 (hl2) is using about 660 MB out of 4GB ram. Lots of background processes, with McAfee processes using about 100+ MB ram and Google chrome (32 bit) is using close to 800+ MB ram. Could that be the problem?

I would close Google Chrome and try again. Anything that uses your Internet could potentially cause lag.

Update:Just tried closing Google Chrome. Same thing, increased to about 60-70 fps for only a few seconds, then dropped down again back to 30fps again.

Could about 40% of memory usage impairing to game performance?

Shouldn't be. Your memory is more than sufficient for Team Fortress 2's needs. I'm honestly not sure what to suggest, I'm sorry.

It's okay, you have tried, thanks anyway.

It's maintaining at 100 fps+ for now...I have no idea how to fathom this.
