Black screen after windows login, directx update

After purchasing some games during the Christmas sale, i install them and have to update directx like usual. Two games i bought, Spec Ops: the line, and Bad Company 2, the updater gets stuck on every step of the directx update. I looked up ways to get around this, but after i run the game and finish playing, the next time i log into my computer or unlock it, i get a black screen with only a mouse pointer. the only way i can fix this is by doing a system restore. Im using windows 8.1
