Downloading Speed
Hey Guys,

I am in the process of downloading my steam games back onto my pc. Got sick of the console gaming lol. Anyways, is it just me or does the downloading speed seem off. I'm in Cleveland Ohio and Steam chose Detroit as the closest point. My internet speed download is around 35 mbps. However I haven't seen more than 4mbps download here. Is this normal? I have no restrictions within the steam settings. A friend of mine noticed it first and said thats off. So now it has me curious.

Appreciate the responses,
Tribe

35mbps = 4.375MBps actual download

is your connection really 35mbps or 35MBps?

then steam will show a max of around 3.5MB/s
its approx 10:1 for Mb/s vs MB/s
8 bits per Byte, when transfered start/stop bists are added

1mbps (megabits per second) = 1/8MBps (megabytes per second)
8bits = 1 byte

usually, internet service providers usually sell internet speed in megabits per second (Mb/s)
divide this by 8 to get actual download speed in megabytes per second (MB/s).

afaik, steam game client reports download speed in KB/s (kilobytes per second) or MB/s (megabytes per second)

You might want to try changing your download region to somewhere that is likely to be quiet right now. Like somewhere in Europe...Luxembourg for instance. The closest server isn't always the best choice if a lot of other people are using it at the same time.

I think you're right.
