contact the retailer you got the key from , the problem is between you and them not steam . if the retailer is a legit outfit they will give you another key

okay, i will. I read the terms and conditions of the retailer they said that "Product codes/ keys for discs verified defective will not be replaced. In such events, only replacement discs will be give" dafuq is that about? a new disc? a new disc doesnt matter if the codes dont work

thats true, a new disc wont fix your problem.
usually if you contact the website/store where you'f bought the game they will give you a new key/game.

-> always buy keys from trusted websites

Valve doesn't owe you anything, you didn't pay them right? Get mad at the people responsible instead.

I am pretty sure most would say they are *trusted* but just how trusted are they? have they had feedback from others to ensure it?

if the cd key has been used doesn't that mean someone has used a pirate cd key to activate an illegal copy, which means that Steam has to check the original account with that CD key

my mate just gave me a copy of a game for my birthday. I have gotten this duplicate CD key error. He would have bought it from a main stream retailer in Australia.

the effort of hoping he has the receipt getting that of him and/or giving him the game back to go to a store to exchange kinda sucks considering

1) the store didn't do anything wrong
2) my mate didn't do anything wrong
3) i haven't done anything wrong & can't play an awesome game I got for a present

There's certain stores of ill repute that sell games that they re-shrink wrap (they're masters, you can't tell) after they're done and ready to sell to you. Its how they keep the employees up to date on the games they're about to sell. Trust only the steam store in this regard. Otherwise your mileage will vary. (Physical stores not named... but you can guess real easy.)

Key was used already. Contact that shady sites support and ask for a new key.
