Create desktop shortcut not working

Steam is no longer creating desktop shortcuts, either on initial install or when attempting to create a shortcut manually using the right-click option in the Library.

The error message for a manual install is "Could not create shortcut. A shortcut to this game is probably already on the desktop." However, if I browse to the Desktop under My Computer and search for the game name, no results are found.

I test-installed a game from GOG and it created its shortcut successfully, although GOG creates the shortcut on the Public Desktop where Steam defaults to the per-user desktop.

Moving a couple of shortcuts off the main desktop into a subfolder does not fix it, so it's not a matter of running out of IDs. (Long shot, but wanted to try everything.) I would try reinstalling Steam, but I'm worried that it might want many of the existing games reinstalled.

This issue has cropped up a few times for other Steam users previously, but this has supposedly been fixed already.

I'm having this issue too! I would really love to know how to fix this as this is how I tend to access my games.

As I recall this was eventually fixed by a reboot.

I may or may not have also done a manual reinstall of the Steam client.

I reinstalled Steam, and I am having the same problem.

This just happened to me two days ago. My shortcuts no longer work. Researching now. If Steam is this unstable I may longer give them money. So far only 20 bucks from me.

your money will not be wasted just reinstall the games

i don't know why it isn't working, But I'm running on Ubuntu...

This is also happening to me. I backup my dota game before I formatted my laptop last month, and now that I've changed from Linux Mint to Ubuntu, restored it from back-up, but can't create shortcuts. It was all a big issue for me, cause also the game kept switching windows and got categorised with other steam windows so it was hard to switch it back. Long story short, it isn't that big a deal for me anymore, but the fact that I can't launch the game without opening steam client and the fact that the game gets grouped with other steam windows is bad.
