I think the best thing to do to test your theory of whether or not the top sellers are a lie is to compare the top 5 sellers on steam and on that site. If they're on par... valve/steam aren't doing anything wrong. If they're off by a large margin... you can assume maybe something suspicious is going on. Granted, make sure the top 5 are all steam-only games to avoid any incorrect data. I would do it but I'm busy watching The Universe: Ancient Mysteries Solved season 2 episode 1 right now.
ha I told you to check 3rd party sites for unofficial numbers in my first post.
CSGO is relatively cheap, not very system demanding, well received, often updated/tweaked , and has maintained a large active community which keeps gamers from leaving and entices gamers in.
I myself don't really share the fondness of games like it. It's not a mindless fps like others and is one of those games that focused on gameplay first and everything else is secondary. I find games like it repetitive and are drawn to games that are more narrative or have more structure .
*facepalm*
1. Dogbite develops a conspiracy theory
2. Dogbite has absolutely zero proof, just a "feeling".
3. Others try to explain to him that he is not going to get any evidence from Valve themselves.
4. For Dogbite, this confirms his conspiracy (because if they are not lying, they have no reason to hide anything, RIGHT???)
5. Dogbite posts an accusation that Valve is dishonest.
================
Reality:
1. Due to the amount of scamming and therefore banning, many players buy several copies of the game (whenever they lose it), but this is reported as multiple sales of course.
2. Due to the frequent price reductions, the game is easily purchaseable.
3. Due to the game's popularity, many people are in the target group, so the game sells very well.
4. The "Top ...." table is generating by a program, and while it would be possible to make it double CS:GO sales, it doesn't make much sense, because if ever any of the programmers who can see the code talked to the press, the trust in Valve would be shattered. Just check how much ridicule Microsoft got everytime it turned out that supposedly XBOX consoles at Conventions are actually PCs running Windows.
And while you are right to not believe everything that is fed to you, in case of CS:GO, there is no doubt its the most sold game on Steam. Anyone with a brain can figure it out without the need for proof.
Counter Strike was the most popular MP game even before Valve officially took over. C:GO and Dota 2 were made BECAUSE there was high demand.
The other reason is that, most of CS:GO players have multiple accounts. This is common with any popular MP game. Specially a competitive MP game. Even more so with an in-game economy.
As for proof, just look at my inventory. I have 30 copies of CS:GO still left after selling many from the stock I bought during last sale. And I can assure you that if I sell them at the price I bought, they will all sell today.
