An issue with Half Life 1
So, I found some old discs for Half Life 1 and Opposing Force, so I decided to play them. They play fine, except for black bars on the sides of the screen that no resolution seems to fix. Keep in mind this is the non-steam version. What do I do?

Why not activate it on Steam? Pretty sure there's an updated version fixing that.

The patch level of those version does not support 16:9 resolutions, hence the black bars.
The advice by Laptop65 is sound.

What GPU and Driver?
Activate your CDKEYs on Steam account, then u will get the proper Patch Updates for those games.

Pick the correct res for your screen in the game options.
If that is not allowed in a certain game (like lack of widescreen support for example) and u have an NVIDIA GPU, then go into NVIDIA Control Panel > Desktop Size and Position > select Full Screen and change Display to GPU and apply. That should force any full-screen app to stretch out to full screen fill, regardless of in-game resolution.

It's pretty easy to activate your game on Steam

Okay guys, I took your suggestions and now my things are in steam. But I ran into another issue. I saw the black bars in blue shift and turned on widescreen in the options, thinking that would fix it. Now the game is super zoomed in on the screen and I cant navigate the menu at all, so I cant turn it off.

Do you know how to do -autoconfig?

Nope.

Right click the game in Steam > properties> launch options > -autoconfig

Then launch the game and see if it changes anything.

don't forget to remove the -autoconfig after that, or every time you launch this game it will reset it's settings

Go to the same place you added the "-autoconfig" command.

Type in -w 1366 -h 768
