Comcast "Xfinity" Connection Problem Resolution
In case anyone else is having this or a similar problem, I'm posting my resolution to a Steam connection issue.

For reference, my computer hardware and software is:

Intel Core i7-2600, 3.4 Ghz
12 GB DDR3 10600 SDRAM
Comcast "Xfinity" Internet service
Technicolor "TC8305C" wireless router / gateway
Windows 8.1
Norton security suite (included with Comcast)

Although I was able to browse the web and download Steam, I was never able to connect to the Steam servers after attempting to log-in. I tried the port-forwarding suggestions from the Steam support pages and from elsewhere on the web, both in the router and in Norton, but nothing seemed to work.

The problem is something to do with the firewall in the router. You can leave the Norton firewall running, but you will need to disable the router's firewall.

To do this, follow below (these directions are using the factory defaults):

1) Open your web browser and go to {LINK ENTFERNT}
2) Enter your admin credentials (user name: admin; password: password - case sensitive)
3) Look in the left panel for the "gateway" item. Click it if it is not already open
4) Click on "firewall"
5) Click on "custom security," and then check the box next to "disable entire firewall"

If anyone else is having problems with this kind of an issue, I hope this helps.

Two updates:

1) I only needed to do this one time. Now that I completed a successful sign-on and turned the router's firewall back on I don't have the problem;

2) I never had the Xfinity program installed.

I caught a virus on my computer, and had to erase and reinstall everything. It was the first time I had to do a clean install of Steam in about 2 years, and this had been an issue for me for nearly a week.
