Game update size
Is there anyway to tell what size the updates are to any given steam game?

I find myself in the same jam as I have before as my bandwidth is about $10 per gb and even though I can't find the exact size for the update to Just Cause 2...@100kbps it will take about 10 hours to download so that puts the size at about 3gb, right?.. costing me $30...meaning, I won't be playing this game again.

So for future reference, is there any way to tell what size the update that we evidently have no choice but to do (I assume so anyway) without having to aproximate the size and before I purchase the agame? I couldn't find the info anywhere.

Thanks.

Oh, forgot the most imprtand part, how do I stop the update? It's eating bandwidt as I write.
I know steam doesn't care, I mean we are just customers but, FWIW, an easy way to stop these updates would be the considerate thing to do as it is a problem for some of us.

The game has to udpate and there's no fucntional way to stop them unles you go into offline mode. You can manage your bandwidth via the client but the bandwidth costs are yours to bear.

Yeah, I know I have to pay for my bandwidth. Since it's just not feazable to be in offline mode all the time, I guess I need to uninstall the game to stop the updating then?

And on knowing the update size before I buy? Just no way to tell? .....anyone?

Will Steam listen and actually follow through with suggestions and if so where do I post those? If not, oh well. Seems a pretty simple thing to post the update size unless Steam thinks it will reduce sales on some games...hard to say why they don't already do that.

Thanks for your help, Sat
Active downloads, press the tiny line on bottom of client, or view, downloads.....

Get away from that expensive line. 10$ per gb...... Whats that? Satelite?

Thanks, Muppet, that helps some. I was off by 9/10 of a gig...a $39 download.

Steam really needs to stop forcing those on us, it makes no sense unless they have some way of profiting by making us download somethging I find I usually don;t really need. that or they are just mean /too lazy to make some simple changes.

Now if I can just figure out a way to find the downlad sizes "before" I buy the game, I'll be good to go. But since It would stop me from buying a game, I probably won't find the info. This has to be costing some game makers at least some profit when customers won't touch their games due to this issue.

Na, not Satelite, Muppet, but close....cell tower hot spot. Comcast and AT&T are huge cheats in my area so I get by fine on the the Sprint tower and for just $20 per month, with the exception of problems. like this. Hey, before I changes to another carrier, it was costing me $25 per gig and this game would have cost me right at $100 to play, not to mention purchase price.

Thanks again and maybe next time I'll just try asking here for udate sizes before I buy.

yes
You need a broadband connection for steam.
Try to find a netcontract with a flat rate. Look at it this way: You wasted 20$ for an update of a game.
Even if a flatrate would cost 20$ more, you would have a whole month of free downloads left now!

Na,I'll just do without as I have been. Some of the updates aren't so big so that works but forcing 4gigs is rediculous, even for those who have a good connection, as Steam speed seems pretty slow so it takes anyone a long time to download something like that.

I really shouldn't have to pay more for a service, no one should when Steam could easily fix this but, I know. it just won't happen.

Oh well., maybe one day they will wake up and get on the ball. and until then I can play any game from any of the others just not Steam so, no biggie.

You pay more for less service to your phone company..... Thats the point.

I understand that but what I mentioned about the land services in my area are the whole problem, I just have a hard time doing business with crooks like CC/AT&T...thst's my point. Sure I could get more for less but sometimes it costs us to stick with doing what we think is right....at least it stinks in this case....that's life:)

You can't set games to not update unless in perma offline mode. As for your download cap charges, that's really on your end. Valve aren't responsible for how many / how big game patches are by game developers.

Of course it's on my end. lol, did I blame my cap on anyone?

And no, Valve is not resopnsible for the size of the updates, did I say that...why would anyone even think that? However, they are responsible for forcing them on the customer...which if you read carefully is my only gripe. Putting words in my mouth/blaming the victim won't make the problem go away but whatever floats your boat.

Being forced to download outragously large updates is still rediculous. and I seriousely doubt I'm the only one who thinks so.. Origin and others don't require it, that in itself should tell you there is actually something too what I'm saying...simple logic.

It's not the end of the world for anyone and up to steam if they want to respond to the issue or not. Maybe those in the same shoes as I are such a minority steam doesn't care but it's such a needless thing to do to people/makes so little sense, unless it's somehow profitable for steam... I thought it worth the mention and always will....Hope no one minds too much. :)

Oh, cut the download speed down to 16 kbps so, if y'all can keep me talking for a couole of years, I'll end up getting my download without it taking such a big bite out of my budget and I should have a full head of gray hair by then to boot. :)

Steam, settings, downloads, limits.
