Banned for doing the right thing?
So I used to pirate games a lot when I was younger and I felt bad about it. One game in particular, the Binding of Isaac. So when the new game came out (Rebirth) I wanted to make amends, I bought the entire collection for myself and for a friend, including DLC's, OST (even though I'll never listen to it outside of the game), you name it.

I made a post talking about how I had pirated the first one three years ago and I felt bad, so I purchased the entire collection twice over, and then I was promptly kicked to the curb by the moderators and permanently banned.

I feel vilified and indignant. I went out of my way to do the right thing and then the people I just gave a bunch of money to spit in my face. I understand condoning piracy is grounds for a permanent ban, but how was I condoning it?

According to the mod I was encouraging piracy, but how is admitting my past saying it's acceptable? I was saying the exact opposite. By that logic, ex-drug addicts talking about their road to recovery are condoning drug use.

Could I get some clarification?

First off: You didn't go out of your way to do the right thing. Doing the right thing would have been not pirating it to begin with. Don't conflate 'making amends' with 'doing the right thing'. They are not the same.

Second: ANY discussion of piracy is grounds for banning at moderator discretion. The Dev/Publishers are even less likely to give leeway depending on context than the Steam Global mods are, and that is their right.

And the lesson is? Don't paint yourself with a bullseye next time.

They are absolutely the same thing. Making amends was the right thing to do. I can't change my past, all I can do is move forward. What I did was the appropriate response.

Well if their goal is to alienate their customers then mission accomplished. I can't say I regret my purchasing decision but I'll definitely keep it in mind for the future. It was a real slap in the face. It reminds me of one time when I was thrown out of a store after making a purchase at a gas station I visit daily, I spoke with the manager the next day about throwing out customers and that employee got canned. Unfortunately that probably won't apply here. I'm just another face in the crowd.

Yes, I'll make sure it will never be an issue again. Their loss.

I have a problem with formerly installed games missing in my library and sent a question to the support last friday. Now we have tuesday and there is still no response. They do not only spit in your face when they have your money, they also laugh about you behind your back afterwards.

Well I haven't had many issues until now. Actually my account was compromised last year and they got right back to me. Might wanna check the ticket status.

I think this is an issue with whatever the specific community moderator was. It's interesting too because when I posted on reddit.com/r/bindingofisaac, I got a TON of positive feedback for my post. I really don't see what I did wrong here.

No. If you had done the right thing, you wouldn't be making amends. Fixing your mistake is an appropriate response, but doing the right thing would have avoided all of that. If you've done something wrong, making amends is OBLIGATORY. It should in no way be seen as something you had a choice about, because not doing it just furthers your wrong deed.

Yeah, the "any discussion of <XYZ>" rules are basically asking for terrible moderation decisions.

Making amends is morally obligatory, sure, but not legally/practically. Which means it absolutely constitutes doing the right thing. That's what doing the right thing is: a choice to do something you consider morally 'obligatory'. It's a choice because you could choose not to.

No joke, and I looked at the moderators profile. He's only been a mod for a couple months. I think he's having a little too much fun with his newly found ban hammer. Is there anywhere to file a formal complaint?

Restitution does not absolve him of his misdeed. The ban is the punishment. Once you have committed a wrong action, anything you do in relation to that action to make good is no longer 'doing the right thing'. It is doing what you are SUPPOSED to do if you've done something wrong. He did something wrong. He came forward. He got his punishment. There is no 'doing the right thing' here.

Pubs/devs run their discussion pages as they see fit. Valve does not interfere.

Admitting to piracy of any kind is grounds for a permanent ban. Doesn't matter if you bought the game or not.

This has always been the case on Steam forums.
