Xbox 360 Controller Voice Headset incoming voice routing to "Headset Earphone" audio device
I gues the topic explains it. I have an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows and the 360 headset that plugs into the bottom of it. I have set Steam up to use the mic from the heatset but the incoming voice audio is routing to the main speakers. I wish the voice audio to be coming out of the 360 Controller Headset speaker not the mains speakers. I can select the mic to use but I can't seem to find an option to route the incoming "voice" audio to the "headset earphone" audio device. Perhaps there is a way to set this within the source engine based game's config files or config files for Steam? This would really help in preventing echo etc as the headset headphone speaker would not feedback into the headset mic like it does when the audio is coming from the mains speakers. If you can select the mic to come from another audio device different from audio device being used for game sound then I do not understand why the API etc does not have the ability to route the incoming voice to another audio device. I believe this feature isn't inside of the UI but I bet money it's available in software via config file.

Does anyone know where the Steam configuration is stored for voice? This would be a great place to start!

Currently within the Windows audio settings I have the "Headset Microphone" (Xbox 360 Wireless receiver for Windows) audio device set as the default communication devices for both recording and playback.

Other applications that use the API call properly do default to that device like for example Skype and other IP telephony applications.

I can set the Steam source game to use the "Headset Earphone" as the default playback device but it then globally routes all audio to that device.

I can then set the game (if inside it's options it has the ability) to use another playback audio device and not the default and assign it to the mains and all will work but this is BS Valve as the UI should have the options to set the "voice" audio PLAYBACK device specifically like it can do for the RECORDING device.

The API supports this, your voice software supports this, I'm sure it's available by editing a config file but it's NOT IN THE USER INTERFACE and I'm unaware of what to edit in terms of config files/reg to assign the "voice" audio PLAYBACK to the "Headset Microphone" audio playback device specifically.

I know this is possible as I've got it working with non source engine games by setting the "Headset Earphone" to the global default audio device within windows then within games that have the option to specify the main speakers audio device so the game audio comes out of the mains speakers whilst Steam voice IP telephony audio comes out of the 360 Wireless Controller headset earphone.

This is nothing but a software trip in terms of UI!

FIX IT!

Did you ever get this fixed?
I have the same problem.
Steam uses your windows settings. So set whatever you want to use as default devices in Windows.
