Orange Box

I bought the Orange Box when it came out (before I had a my current Steam account) and loaded it on my PC and enjoyed the heck out of it. I want to load it on my new PC, but when I try, I get a message about my Product Key already in use or something. Is there a solution to this?

If you insalled it on steam, then you should be able to install all of the games like normal. TF2 is free to play now, so that' s out of the equation. And the other two. if you bought the box at a gamestop or something, and it wasn't on steam, then you probably have used it, and can't play it unless you buy it on steam, or pirate them heck, even moving them over on a flash drive or something might work

I don't see how you played it without a Steam account, as to my knowledge all the games use the Steamworks DRM. There should be a link on the redeem page after it fails to "recover lost key" or something like that - this will send an email to the address associated with the account it's tied to. You can then try to recover that account.

Steam games cannot be transferred to other accounts. You'll have to use the account the game was registered on, or buy a new copy (Greenmangaming will have "Orange Box" on Daily Deal tomorrow).

Use the same account. Product keys can only be used on one account. Accounts however, can be used on as many computers as you want.

I think it's because it's registered to the old PC, it wont load on the new one. I'm pretty sure this was a way to prevent someone from buying one copy and handing it out to all their friends to install and hand it back. I may be wrong however, this is just my speculation.

I'm sure you're right about the Steam account. It's been so long ago, I don't remember TBH. I probably had a Steam account back then, and maybe opened up a new one at some point later. I did like you said about "recover" thing, and expected an email, but never received one. That was about a week ago. I've checked all my email addresses and their "junk" folders too. Still nothing. Thanks for any help.

This could be true with other games, but Valve games do not and have never used PC-based DRM; it is most likely tied to an account OP forgot he had.

Well, sorry we couldn't find a solution for you. It does go on sale very frequently however - there may even be a Halloween sale! If not, the closest large sale is the Winter sale, and it should be less than $15 then.

Maybe you used an university EMail address or something similar that's no longer available to you.

Steam support might be able to assist you in recovering the account to access the game.

Also, if Valve ever used a different DRM scheme, they probably entered all those keys into Steam by now.

It can only be traded if it goes to your inventory (not your library), though I would imagine it'll go straight to your library instead. However, games cannot be sold on the market.
