Steam China CAN NOT connect to steam store.
this issue connect with most of 16billiant players in China, today 23th, oct, 2014, more players can not connect to the steam store. And the news said GFW block the steam store. That's it? Is this the end? How about our games bought on steam, how about the money and those happy hours we spent? We love you, Dear Steam! you should do something, maybe refund all the money for those players who love you, or maybe you should solve the problem with chinese gov to defend your clients' right. We are waiting behind the desk.

GFW is the answer for your WHY, as for most cross-border connection problems in China...

Steam Store Being Blocked in China - Goodbye Everyone
The domain name "store.steampowered.com" has been blocked in almost all the parts of China since totay. Sometimes even the community cannot be visited.

I'm afraid the blocking of gaming servers and updating servers is only a matter of time.

Although I know this is because the government in China sucks and nothing wrong in Steam's end, I do hope something can be done to remedy this, 'cause I have spent not only hundreds of US dollars but also hundreds of hours in the past 4 years on Steam. I just love gaming on Steam.

I don't know.

I don't know how to describe my feelings now. It's the desperate. It's the helpless.

Goodbye my Steam fellas, just in case someday we are totally blocked from Steam. It was a nice time with you all.

Steam Purchase via VPN
I heard a rumor (might not be correct) that if one wanted to buy games on steam via VPN, the steam team would lock the associated account and freeze the transaction. The thing is, right now neither purchasing games nor simple look-around on the store page is possible while me and my laptop stay in China. So is there anyway I can solve this technique issue at all?\

Thanks,
Otree

purchasing with vpn will get you locked no matter what reasons it may be, why ? because it will be considered as bypassing regional pricings and restrictions.

edit : well i can imagine some cases where if u would use a vpn but the vpn would be located in the same country as where u are from being ok, like; real ip from china then using a chinese vpn to buy i think that would be ok but as soon as u go to another country u are in a violation.

The number of games that are banned in China anyway, im surprised you can find anything on Steam to play.

The China government, or more specifically their Ministry of Culture have banned hundreds of games and with the number of sites that are blocked, it is/was only a matter of time before they block Steam!

We don't know why. Only hope PSN not be the next.

Negative.

Fight against the censorship will drive chn government mad, "google" is the actual case.
Therefore I personally can't count on "steam" to do anything with this...

Also, (not sure) rumor floats that "steam" is going to target china market, certainly they are willing to coordinate with the censorship.

btw, I am a chn player too (I observed this block issue 10 hours ago, and have to use some network proxy to complain here...).
In my view, if this is confirmed a government behavior, I think it's nothing about political at all, but only the money things...
this is NOT fun, this is my life.

小学生别翻译机弄一下就出来丢脸
The steam store website seems to be blocked by Chinese ISP (includes Unicom and Telecom). Thousands of steam user are now suffering from this blockade.
The reason is unknown now but the preliminary diagnosis implies that the GREAT FIRE WALL should be related to this issue.

store.steampowered.com is completely blocked.
www.steamcommunity.com is sometimes unable to be visited.
Alipay service on steam is not functional at this time.

So Steam guys, do you have any idea of this serious vexation? or some plan?

Sorry for the bad english of our Chinese friend.
