Activating portal 2 from a confirmation code

My girlfriend bought portal 2 for me back on December 2011. I have the confirmation email from the purchase, and a 'Confirmation Number' that is all digits and 19 characters. How can I re-download the game for free using the confirmation number?

I opened Steam and clicked on Games / Activate a product on steam. When I put my confirmation number into the 'product code' box, it just says 'the product code you entered is not valid'

make sure you write everthing with caps lock and don't mistacke O with 0 ,also make sure the code haven't been activated yet...

The confirmation codes are NOT Steam keys, so you can't use them to find your game.

Your game has been attached to an account;: the account name is in the same EMail that gave you the confirmation code. Log into this account and use it to play the game, you cannot move it to another account.

The confirmation number is not a product key. You can't do anything with that number.
You have to use the Steam account you redeemed the game on. Then you can download it again.

hmm. ok. for what its worth, i think i played it on my 1 and only account. I definitely downloaded it and played it in 2012. It was a gift from my GF. But now its not in my game library and when i go to the game it just gives me the option to purchase. I haven't been on steam for 2 years or so. The confirmation code is in her email, which i have open. I will maybe try to login to steam using her email address...

Well, if it was bought by someone else then maybe there's a gift involved as well.

The confirmation number should help with one thing: Steam support can probably use it to tell you where the game ended up being :-)

Again, start by reading the text of the email. Does it talk about a gift purchase, what account does it mention, and start from there.

When you do that you can check her gift history. Also, you should have a "gift received" email with your account name on it.

I got it figured out finally. Thank all of you for your responses. It just took some tinkering between our 2 different email accounts, and I read her confirmation email closely and she used a different user name than the one I thought was my only account. So after retrieving / resetting the account she used, I was able to get it setup and I am now downloading Portal 2 again. YAY! Im excited to play it on my new computer. :)
