Adding a non-Steam game in the library
Is it possible to add a game that i didnt buy from Steam, which i own on DVD?
And if so, will i be able to play it and download it in the future when i want to replay that game?

I'm trying to get rid of some old DVD's which have piled up over the years, but some games, like Dragon Age: Origins, i might want to play again some day.

Thanks!

No, for the vast majority of non-Steam games, such a conversion is not possible. You can try entering the CD-key (if the game has one) into Steam to see if it's accepted (but don't get your hopes up -- chances are none of your keys will work). Borderlands has a granting tool on Steam; I'm not currently aware of other games with such a tool.

You could just store your DVDs somewhere, of course.

Dragon Age: Origins can probably be registered on Origin. Worked for me, anyway.
You cannot add Dragon Age: Origins on Steam but as a non-Steam -game (with the ingame overlay -support), but you can add it on Origin with the CD-key that came with your retail copy.

This list isn't entirely up to date, so take it with a pinch of salt, but most of the games that are found here, can be activated through Steam.

If unsure, you may try to add the CD-key yourself via Add a Game -> Activate a Product on Steam.
Adding a non-Steam game only means that you can use Shift+Tab in it.

And take screenshots, and use the in-game overlay as a whole which includes the Music Player, Webkit -browser, friendslist, et cetera.

Yes, you can do this by opening steam, at top click on "Games" and click Add a non-steam game to my library

No, that requires a license on steam to download game content. If this was allowed, steam would be able to stream game content to anyone that doesn't own the 'license'

To obtain a license, you have to register the CD-key on the platform of the game's publisher, in DA:O case , that's EA > Origin. I don't have an origin account, but I'm sure Origin let's you register your CD key for digital download.

This... plus they're giving it away for free at the moment, so you can replace your DVD for that at least.

Only the basic one, if OP has the 'Ultimate' -edition, s/he should still redeem the key on Origin him-/herself.
Steam are selling the expansion pack to Dragon Age Origins but state it requires the Steam version to play. As Brujeira mentioned the older version can be registered on Origin.

Why don;t you make a list of the games DVD's you want to keep playing and send it to Steam for confirmation?
Thanks a lot everyoNe for your responses!

Adding the key to Origin worked perfectly! Although i would prefer to use one and the same client for every game, at least i have a digital back-up now.
DA:O was just one example. I'm going to have to fihure out what to do with the rest of the piled up DVD's :)
