Stuck on 'updating steam information'.
Last night my friend came over and he wanted to show me the Vanishing of Ethan Carter, we thought the easiest way to do this would be to have him sign into his steam account on my pc and quickly download it so we can play.

I signed out of my account and he logged in, then we got to a stage where steam told us it was 'updating steam information', with a progress bar that does not progress.

When I restart steam it skips sign, automatically connecting to his account and getting stuck updating steam information. I presume because we clicked the remember my password box when he singed into his account.

Is there anyway that I can remove his information from my pc that is not through the client? That would enable me to sign back into my account instead of connecting to his, thus solving my issue, hopefully.

So far I have tried:

-Refreshing steam files (steam://flushconfig)

-Running steam as administrator

-Searching through my steam folder deleting files that look like they could be related to an account, that were also created yesterday evening

I am not too keen on reinstalling steam as I have about 750Gb of games saved at the moment and that would be a pain to have to download again.

Thanks for any help.

EDIT: It seems like the problem fixed itself after updating steam information for about 3 hours. If anyone has any advice feel free to post it here just in case someone has the same issue

I have sadly the same issue. But this time my bootstrapper won't load the client at all. I can log in.. But i'm then stuck with the "Steam, Updating Steam Information" window. It's been like this since yesterday.

EDIT : i also noticed that this is one year later after your post. Which is odd to say the least lol

anyone know how to fix it?
I'm getting this now

guys it fixed itself for me. You need to let it sit for a very long time. Like for me it took an hour, just be patient and let it stay open

Apparently you can also download this program called "TCP view" and you can right click the steam program click close connection and then steam will try and reconnect to a TCP server. However in my case steam was already running through TCP like it should be, so it didn't really change much. It seems so weird that a problem like this, that has occured for the last 4 years, isn't really fixed. It could just be because the steam servers have reached capacity but idk

Will try that when I get home.

I tried the TCP view however it did not solve the problem for me... I am just going to leave it at "updating steam information" and let you know if it ends up working eventually haha....

I only just started getting this now as well, it first started dcing me from the internet every 2-3 mins on steam, then when I tried uninstalling/reinstalling to try and fix it, it gave me this problem instead.

ding ding ding the the moment I just finished writing this, it just fixed it self by sitting there for nearly 2 hours

So. I reinstalled my steam, But I left my steam apps, steam.exe and user data (which I dont think is that important, apparently it has some saved games in it) then I started it up again and waited a bit and now it works after like 1-2 hours of sitting in the update

hey guys, i managed to get this working by going through a VPN, which suggests it is an issue with the australian servers. I posted this on another thread and someone warned this could result in suspension so I"m not sure if I should recommend it, but thats the way i got steam to log in, then turned it back off right away.

i think so long as you don't try to buy a game with the VPN running you should be under no risk, but I don't really know what the rules are.

Now Im stuck on with my old problem before I tried reinstalling steam, I keep getting dced every bloody 2-3 mins

steam needs to get their ♥♥♥♥ to gether because ive left it for 3 hrs now and still nothing

Yeah guys apparently according to one of my friends he had a similar issue and the steam servers in Australia were down/dodgy. But it was weird because all those steam server status websites didn't say anything, so it made us all feel like the problem was isolated to ourselves.

I had the exact same issue with steam being choppy and disconnecting then reconnecting over and over again. Which I fixed by reinstalling steam, but if you've reinstalled it, then I would probably wait until tomorrow and try again since it is probably an issue on Valve's end

Man really 3 hours??? I spent like 3 hours trying to get it to work but only an hour of it, did I just let it sit there and do nothing
