where do i put a steam key?

Hi and thanks for reading. I got Elite after backing it on KS and they are giving out steam keys now if you already owned the game. I did everything at FD end but dont know where to put the key they gave me.

Only bought the once off steam but read on the site most days.

So from the main page where do i go to insert the key????

Either bottom left corner 'add a game' or from the Steam menu "Games" choose 'activate a product on Steam'

I cant see either!!! Why does it not have a big in your face at the top bit.... Bottom left i see nothing and i see nothing in game?

You need to be inside the Steam client itself, not the website. http://store.steampowered.com/about/

If you see at the top "STORE COMMUNITY STEW ABOUT SUPPORT" you are on the website.
If you see at the top "STORE LIBRARY COMMUNITY STEW" you are in the client.

a right i dont have this on my PC as i dont want to play the game just want it so i can see it is there. I'm just in my account on the website. How did the other game i bought just go in?

I don't know what the other game you bought was.

If you bought it off the Steam Store then it's automatically added to your account.

Some external sites have a 'Activate on Steam' button that can add it to your account if you are logged into your account on their store.

Just to add I'm getting a new PC later in the year i take it it is ok to add this game on this old machine?

from the website i bought on the Xmas sales Tropico4 and its there, not downloaded it or played it. But its safe and sound there in my account.

You can buy products from Steam Store via the website yes; however to add a product to your Steam Account via Product Key, u can only do this from within Steam Client. You don't have to install it, but again to add it to your account u must use Steam Client to do this.

Cheers i now get it. Question if i download the client is it tied to this old machine?? I will not be downloading any games but i just wanted to add this other Game Elite so i can see it from the web page when loged in.

It's not "tied" to any machine. U can install Steam Client / Login / Install your games on as many systems as u like. Just don't login on an untrusted system. Once the product key is activated to the logged in account, u can download/install it at any time, on any system; given it meets the minimum specs and OS requirements.
