Usually is the same when is a Steam Powered game. However retail games will not unlimit accounts anymore.

I prefer Steam. Safest, fastest.

Depends on the game, but having games on Steam for example have the benefit of being downloaded and installed anywhere. If you leave your computer on (with the Steam client turned on), you can also do remote downloading to your desktop using another computer's web-browser; or the Steam Mobile -app.

Some CD-keys activate on Steam; others don't. Those that don't can still mostly be added as a non-Steam -game for use of the in-game overlay.

Steam allows for automatic updates, in-game overlay, broadcasting, taking screenshots and uploading them to the Steam Community, sharing Artwork of the said game, writing reviews, creating guides, viewing the game hubs for problems and for whatever community related. You can also stream your game content from your desktop to your laptop using the In-Home Streaming.

Steamworks (as a DRM) adds support (up to developer how it's utilized) for Steam achievements, Steam Cloud -saving, Steam Workshop (for mods) -content, Steam Trading Cards (cards, badges, emoticons and backgrounds.) + Steam Family Sharing for games that support it.
