I prefer Steam. Safest, fastest.
Some CD-keys activate on Steam; others don't. Those that don't can still mostly be added as a non-Steam -game for use of the in-game overlay.
Steam allows for automatic updates, in-game overlay, broadcasting, taking screenshots and uploading them to the Steam Community, sharing Artwork of the said game, writing reviews, creating guides, viewing the game hubs for problems and for whatever community related. You can also stream your game content from your desktop to your laptop using the In-Home Streaming.
Steamworks (as a DRM) adds support (up to developer how it's utilized) for Steam achievements, Steam Cloud -saving, Steam Workshop (for mods) -content, Steam Trading Cards (cards, badges, emoticons and backgrounds.) + Steam Family Sharing for games that support it.
