When I first installed Steam, it wouldn't let me able to connect to update, fixed the problem then I got the same problem as every one else.
Here is the solution:
1. Go to Computer in your Start button on your computer and go to Local Disc.
2. Go to Program Files (x86).
3. Locate Steam.
4. Go to Steam.exe (If it doesn't show, then it show be just Steam.)
5. Right-click on it and click on Create Shortcut.
6. Once the shortcut is made, right-click it again and click on Properties.
7. A interface appears. In the box which says 'Target', click on that and at the end of the file link do this
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" -tcp
8. Click Apply and go on Steam (Unless Steam is on then close it.)
And there you go! You should be able to login and download what you want with ease. When I fixed the problem with this solution I cried in joy.
LOL.
Hope it helps you and since you found the answer, do tell everyone about it as this is the easist solution to make Steam work.
