Where does Steam put games?
I want to play Tomb Raider but I don't want to download the files. I already have the files from another computer (which was my own) and just want to copy and paste it to some directory where Steam will recognize it and just install it. I did the same for Battlefield 3 on Origin, so I know it's possible.

your Library. Go to the steam store and find toom raider, unfortunately you WILL have to download the files, but you wont have to pay for it again (If you are on the same steam account you got it on)

That's not true, when I got a new computer, I just transferred the files over. My library still showed them as uninstalled, but when I clicked install, it recognized the files that were already there and didn't have to redownload everything.

Well, redownloading things isnt that big of a deal. It seems like transfering the files is more trouble than its worth. Like i said, steam doesnt make you pay the fee again, it just re installs it.

Some games are several GB large, so it was a big timesaver for me. :doodle:

Also some people have internet plans that have a low data cap that's more for general internet browsing and not downloading games that can be 10GB or more each. So downloading a large game might push them over the cap and cost them 10 or 20 bucks.

Thanks! Instead of download, Steam just said "Discovering existing files for Tomb Raider" and it installed in a minute.

@foon, Tomb Raider is like 10 GB, which takes an hour or so for me. Transfer and everything took 5 minutes. So I would think it was worth it.

Yes when u do not have the app_manifest file for a Steam App/Tool/Game
Then in Steam Client (after files are put in correct folder) it will still say "Install" but as long as files are in correct area, then clicking Install should detect + verify those files. Then after this has completed, u can click Play. It's simply a Repair process. Origin and Uplay do the same thing.

Another file is used to determine whether the game is installed, updating or uninstalled. It's usually located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\Common.

Moving the files from one computer to another can be done without moving this file, but it takes more time, as you need to click on "Install" for the game you want to move from one computer to another, which makes Steam find the existing files if you put them in the correct folder, causing no files to be downloaded.
