Steam may not run on all Linux distros. Currently I think it's optimized for Ubuntu and Debian.

I'm having the same lib.so.6 error. I'm running off of Ubuntu 14.04, and I've tried refreshing my steam files as laid out here: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3134-TIAL-4638
I've also tried uninstalling it, then installing steam via Software center. Same result. Via the website, same result. I've got a ticket going with more details. I will let you know if that brings up any successful results.
