At some point somewhere, someone has to spend money. It doesn't have to be you.

You need to buy a license (game / app / DLC) from the Steam Store; or a friend of yours has to who'll then proceed to gifting one to you. OR you'll have to buy an in-game item from within the in-game store.

You'll get 100xp for buying the game but if you want to level up further; you'll have to buy other games and craft their badges. You get 100xp for every badge you craft and you'll need 1,000xp to reach level 10 which is 10 games and 10 badges. Ranking is a big investment on Steam which requires you to spend not only a sum on games but futher money in the marketplace on cards. I'm currently level 54 and it's costing me about £3-4 per level now.
