Side buttons on logitech mouse (M545) don't work in games through steam
EDIT: After some testing, I've realised that I can get my binds to work on a non steam game if I launch the .exe directly. If I launch it with steam overlay, it doesn't. As a result, any game launched through Steam (i.e. ones bought on Steam) will not let me use my binds. Note that this only applies to my side buttons; tilting the mouse wheel works fine.

Hi, I've been looking at getting a mouse with a few extra buttons for gaming (just 2-4 extras) so today I picked up a Logitech M545, a wireless mouse with two side buttons and left/right 'tilts' on shifting the scroll wheel side to side.

I'm running Windows 8.1, so fresh out the box one of the side buttons opens the start menu, and the other throws me to the desktop. First thing I tried was to change those buttons in SetPoint to 'Generic Button'. However, when they're set to GBs, they STILL do their baked-in windows functions.

Then I set them (the side buttons) to square brackets (i.e. [ and ] ) via Setpoint. This solved the problem with the Win8 functions. However, now they don't seem to work at all in games. When I'm in basic apps, such as openoffice, skype, my web browser, pretty much anything 'everyday'. Like, I can type whatever key I assigned the button to. It's only when I go into games that they...don't seem to do anything, at all.

This problem doesn't happen with 'flicking' the mouse wheel left or right. When I bind them to [ or ] then they work in games, as well as my browser. It's nice to have 2 more buttons, sure, but I would really, really prefer to use the more comfortable side buttons.

I've also tried setting them to simulated buttons in x-mouse, to the same effect. But one thing I've noticed is that x-mouse's menu has listings for mouse button 4, mouse button 5, tilt wheel left, and tilt wheel right. When you click a button in x-mouse, the corresponding row lights up orange. Clicking the side buttons does nothing, but tilting the wheel left and right lights up the button 4 and 5 settings respectively.

I've tried the mouse in Unreal Tournament 2004, Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon, World of Warcraft and Shadow of Mordor all to the same result, it doesn't register the side buttons being pressed at all, but tilting the wheel will do what keystroke assignment I set it to.

Any ideas?

I had the same problem with my Logitech Preformance Mx Mouse...
All I did was I went into Setpoint and clicked the "chess piece" on the side and that took me to Game Settings.
Then I disabled Game Detection and everything worked fine!
Hope This Helps! :)

Unfortunatly windows in its infinite wisdom has not updated Direct Input since it came out with the release of directX8. As a result all games that use direct input can give strange/unexpected or just plain not working results on newer hardware or operating ssystems. I experienced this myself in developing my own applications in directX11(june 2010 SDK release).

I did some testing this morning, and as it turns out, in WoW, the bind works...but only when I launch directly through the .exe. If I launch through steam, the bind does not work.

I then tried it by going to an exe of a Steam game (Blood Omen 2) and the bind did not work. So basically unless I do something I can't use my binds in Steam games. I've also tried setting application-specific settings (i.e. those same binds) in setpoint for steam.exe to no avail.

So now my problem's changed from 'my binds don't work' to 'my binds don't work when running anything through steam'.
