What happens if you "remove" a game/mod download halfway through?

So basically I was trying to download some mods but it was like 5 GB so I changed my mind and decided to not download it.
Hence, on the downloads page, I just clicked "pause" and the "remove".
I wanted to ask if the files that were already downloaded are automatically removed or if they still exist on my computer.

They are removed, at least in theory. But you can check steamapps/downloading anytime.
