Can't install Dota 2 to a new hard drive.
So I got a new hard drive, an SDD and I've been trying to install Dota 2 on there. However, it keeps installing to the drive it was on. I've tried deleting local files, moving the folder into my new drive and that won't work. I've tried deleting the whole game completely but that won't work either. I'm not quite sure what to do.

Open the Steam client. Click Steam > Settings. In the new window, go to the "Downloads" tab. Click "Steam Library Folders". In the new window, click "Add Library Folder". At the top of the new window, use the drop-down menu to select your SSD. Find the folder you want to install to, or use "New Folder" to create one. Then left-click on the chosen folder and click "Select". Close the remaining dialogs.
It's already in the Library Folders. Mostly I just don't get an option to change Dota 2's install location after deleting local files.
try league then

I'd rather not. I enjoy Dota, I did like League but I wouldn't go back.

  • When you moved your DOTA 2 folder from (presuming)
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\DOTA 2\
    to
    D:\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\DOTA 2

  • Did you also copy appmanifest_570.acf ? from
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\
    to
    D:\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\

I did not. Would doing so allow me to select the install path? Or would it just automatically install there instead?

It would've increased the likelyhood of Steam actually detecting your files in there. Try downloading on C:\ and then swap to D:\ by moving both the folder and the .acf -file.

Upon download, I see "Choose location for install" when I hit Install on DOTA 2 though. So do make sure Steam does indeed detect the installation folder under Steam > Settings > Downloads > Steam Library Folders.

No luck. It's still being detected. I am able to install other games to my other drive but not Dota.

How would I go about that?
Hey I had the same problem that you had. What worked for me was uninstalling Dota 2 and then uninstalling the Dota 2 Workshop tools which can be found under Library --> Tools. If theres still a rest of those files in your steam folder, then Steam will only install Dota 2 into your main folder. Kinda dumb, but I hope it helps.

You sir are a godsend. Thank you, this fixed the issue. I had completely forgotten I had Workshop Tools installed.
