With laptops that generally not possible. They are not designed to be upgradeable.

Since it's a laptop, it's gonna be difficult enough to just warrant a no.

I have seen it done on laptops

There is a handful where it can be done, but it usually requires the replacement of the whole mainboard. Generally, it's not possible. Without telling us which brand and model of laptop you have, we cannot help you with more specific information.

in some cases it is possible, but cheaper to buy a new, more powerful laptop ... or two of the same specs

any suggestions on one thats under 1000?

where good

That one cannot be upgraded as there are no upgraded parts available for it. There's only one set of specs available.
Pretty much the only thing you can upgrade is the RAM and that wouldn't achieve much as the built-in 8GB are more than sufficient.

DayZ, forget it.
7 Days to die may be possible, don't know.
Black Ops 2 should be possible on low settings.

Any Gaming laptops under 1000 that would run these on high settings?

Buy a desktop next time. You get 2x, sometimes 3x more performance for the same money.
And it will be upgradeable. Being "portable" is overrated. I know dozens of people who bought for that reason and the laptop sits years on their desk.
