Freezing While Downloading
My computer freezes often while downloading games from either steam or origin. I think it's a wireless card issue but I am not positive as I haven't been able to get an ethernet cord long enough to test a wired connection yet. I'd prefer to keep a wireless connection if possible. My specs are win 7 64 bit, amd FX 8 core processor, GeForce GTX 970, 16 gb ram, asus sabertooth 990 fx motherboard, asus pce-n15 wireless adapter. All drivers are up to date.

Any help is appreciated thanks.

How exactly is it freezing?

Does your system become unresponsive? Or just Steam / Origin? (Windows turn white/ Not responding)

The screen just freezes on whatever image is going on at the time. Mouse and keyboard become unresponsive. Only way to shut down is with holding the power button down.

Sounds like a SSD/HDD issue. Whenever you're downloading, you're writing data to your drives.

Try chkdsk on your drives, especially the one containing Steam + library

Maybe it only happened once, but having to turn off the PC while it's transferring data could cause in corrupted data.

Not sure why you blame your wireless card for the troubles. Is there something you know? Have you searched the forums for any related issues with the card you're using? If the above solution didn't fix any of your problems, and you still blame your Wifi card, try using USB if you're using PCI, or vice versa. If problem persist, there are other options to explore.

I've read online people saying that a wireless adapter could be the issue but never found a solution (other than trying a wired connection). PC only freezes while downloading the games. It will finish as long as I keep on turning off and res t arting and the game will function but it's just annoying.

Reading the number of complaints on that specific model, it's probably your Wifi adaptor.

I've seen answers regarding turning off Task Offload, but I'm not sure this will work in your case.

Device Manager > Find your Wifi Adaptor > Properties (rightclick) > Advanced > Task Offload (Click on Task Offload and select Disable on the other dropdown)

If it isn't listed there, You should try alternative hardware if you want to get rid of the problem.

Thanks for the help and advice.

What's task offload? What do you mean "if it isn't listed here"?

a handy fact for you, running wifi more than halfs you're internet speed, are you still thinking about not adding the ethernet wire now?

If you can't find "Task offload" (Ignore the TCP ones), use Ethernet. Or buy a different Wifi adaptor.

Have you heard of any wifi adapters that generally seem reliable? Thanks again for the help.

It has SFA to do with SSD/HDD's etc.. I am having the same issue, started a few days ago (coincidence)!! Downloading full games from Origin works fine, no freezing. Downloading from web, tested by downloading a win7 iso 3 times, not a stutter. Downloading from GOG, works fine (5 games in a row) . Starting a download through Steam freezes within 3-6 mins!!!! . Its a steam issue!! ... and still not found a solution to this crap!!!! Downloading has been working fine up until a few days ago, and all drivers etc are/and have been working fine. I can run steam and play games that are installed no issue, it only freezes/locks up pc when downloading through steam requiring a hard reset.

So now I bought a switch hoping to give myself an extra ethernet jack (I can't wire directly into the router as the way the wiring is set up in my house it would be too difficult). So pretty much I have the connection going cable to modem, to switch (my internet is connected to switch), to router. All of the wireless connections in the house still work fine with the router but I can't get my wired connection to work as it shows the exclamation point saying "it can't very the ip address" or something like that. I've unplugged my modem and my router and plugged them back in and it still doesn't help. Any advice on this? Would I just have better luck swapping the switch out for a modem with two jacks?

Not sure, hasn't froze on me lately as I haven't been downloading anything either. I haven't been able to use a wired connection to test either.
